HH 1947 - HH SLAYING OF LARSON NM
Hitchhike Death Suspect Guilty Raton, N. M., April 23 (AP) Edward C. Jones, 27, former Houston, Texas, insurance salesman, was convicted Tuesday night of first degree murder, for the culvert slaying of Jess V. Larson of Denver, Colo., and the district court jury fixed death as his penalty. Judge Livingston N. Taylor set sentencing for 10 a. m. Friday. It required only 50 minutes for the jury to reject the former para-troop instructor's tearful plea that his life be spared. The verdict made death mandatory by its failure to recommend clemency. The only witness for the defense. Jones broke down several times during brief testimony. He said he did not know why he killed Larson, paper salesman, last March 5 after Larson gave him a ride from Pueblo, Colo. Jones was arrested in Springfield, 111., three weeks after the slaying.
