Bergner Company brings to Decatur a distinguished retailing history and a firm commitment to involvement in, and support of, the community it serves.

It was in 1889 that young Peter A. Bergner first opened shop in downtown Peoria, Illinois. The first Bergner's store was a ladies' specialty by year, the downtown store grew and prospered, then, in March, 1957, Ber-nger's took a major step forward and opened its first suburban store, in Sheridan Village Shopping Center, Peoria. The Sheridan Village store was an immediate success, heralding the era of shopping centers, and to this time has continued to be the sales leader for all the stores in the growing Bergner's group. The decade of the seventies has seen a rapid expansion for the Bergner organization.

In 1971, the company built a store in South Peoria, the Madison Park store; in 1972, a store in the Pekin Mall; 1973 saw the opening of a store in Bloo-mington's Eastland Mall; in 1974, the Peru mall store opened; 1975 was the year for Sandburg Mall, Galesburg; Champaign's Market Place Shopping Center store opened in 1976, and the newest member of the Bergner family of fine stores opened in Quincy Mall, Quincy, on October 19. Bergner's stores, together with the Weise's stores in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin and the newly acquired Myers Brothers stores headquartered in Springfield, Illinois, are subsidiaries of P. A. Bergner and now total 24 stores forming the largest retail complex in Illinois, outside of the Chicage Market Bergner's stores are unique in appearance and design, the result of years of extensive research into European retailing styles and store design. Gone are the walls, cornices, corner lighting and other impediments to light and motion.

The customer sees almost no showcases, no drawers, and has no feeling of unseen merchandise. Rather, there is a feeling of freedom, space and light in all Bergner's stores, including the remodeled downtown Peoria "parent" store, which makes shopping a joy. All of the Bergner's stores are totally and completely stocked with fine brand name merchandise for which more than 50 buyers are constantly searching the markets of New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and the entire world. The broad selection of merchandise reflects Bergner's creed, "To shop all markets of our great land and the world for quality brand name merchandise, and to offer it to our customers at the best possible prices."
