tions, a died Wednesday (April Services will be private. Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Dallas, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hunter was born in the coal mining country of southern West Virginia, the son of Otis John and Lillian Farley Hunter. He began writing at an early age and while still in high school was a reporter and feature writer for his hometown newspaper.

Always on the lookout for more to do, he played piano and organ for silent movies. As an undergraduate at Ohio State University, poetry was one of his principal interests, and I he won the Vandewater Poetry Prize. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After graduation, he attended Juilliard School of Music in New York, followed by a tour of Europe, where he played piano for a distinguished professor of music in Paris. The professor advised him to go home and practice for seven more years, but by the mid-1930s, back in West Virginia, still studying music, Hunter was buying and selling minor league baseball players for the Mountain State League.

At this time, World War II was looming and Hunter enlisted in the National Guard. Within three years, he was on the general staff at the Pentagon and later, from Panama, he planned the American defense of the Caribbean, for which he won the Legion of Merit. Hunter left the service as a lieutenant colonel and accepted a position as business manager for the North Carolina Symphony. At the same time, he worked on a master's degree in drama and wrote "Unto These Hills" as his master's thesis. Caught up in the university atmosphere at Chapel Hill, he also went on to earn a Ph.D.

in English literature. After a year as a Guggenheim Fellow spent in writing, he accepted a position at Hollins College, Virginia, in the drama department and as chairman of the Fine Arts Department. In 1964, Hunter became the first dean of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Outdoor symphonic dramas represented only one aspect of Hunter's writing; he also had several full-length indoor plays produced and frequently composed the music for his plays. "Unto These which has been seen by more than 6 million people, will play again this summer for its 52nd consecutive summer and his play at Boone, N.C., "Horn in the West," will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

He fashioned dramas with historical themes and uplifting values for some 15 or more other states. He was married for 26 years to Honey Christison of Decatur. The marriage ended in divorce. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever; its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness; but still will keep a bower quiet for us, and a sleep full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet; breathing."
