hrprepsGIRLS BASKETBALL Central girls wins Clinton Tournament I I i I 1 ffH SULLIVAN Continued from B1 outscoring the Tigers 22-15 in the third quarter. "We were working hard and fighting to get back in the game," Wolter said. "In the third quarter we couldn't do anything wrong." Leading by three heading into the final quarter, Sullivan slipped into a rhythm that led to a few mistakes, and the game swung back into the favor of the Tigers. "In the fourth quarter we had a string of turnovers and we made some silly mistakes," Wolter said. "I really wanted to see how we would compete against the caliber team that Urbana is.

They were good competition and I think we gave them a run for their money." But the challenges aren't over for the Redskins. A matchup with Teutopolis looms, as does the beginning of the Okaw Valley Conference schedule. "Teutopolis will be another challenge to see where we are at this point in the season," Wolter said. "We step up and are competitive in big games but we've got to be focused and ready to play regardless of who (our opponent) is. We've got some work to do, but that's what it's all about." In the third place game, Springfield's defense kept the Mount Zion Braves at bay and taking a 48-40 victory.

The Senators' tough man-toman defense forced Mount Zion to swing the ball along the perimeter without much of a chance to take the ball inside. The Senators defense didn't reveal many cracks, leaving the Braves scrambling to force some shots to try and put some points on the board. The Braves' Chelsea Long and Meagan Scraggs scored in double figures, scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively. Julie Farr can be reached at or 421-7967. timeout and was visibly upset in the huddle.

"Yeah, I was a little upset," said Fitzgerald with a laugh. "I think after that timeout, they started to pass the ball better and hit three good baskets in a row." senior Cara McLain continued to show great poise in the paint, taking game-high scoring honors with 23 points and eight rebounds. Fellow senior Sarah Stedman added 13 points and five rebounds. "Tonight, we tried to stay down low on Harned, because she is such a great player," said Stedman. Clinton coach Angie Martin was pleased with her team's effort, and did not use fatigue as an excuse for the loss.

"Physically, they were a little tired tonight," said Martin of her team, which played an overtime game earlier in the day. "But they had to play five games in three days, too." travels to Cowden-Her-rick Tuesday night, while Clinton takes on conference rival St. Teresa in Decatur Monday night. In the third-place game, Meridian suffered through nearly six minutes without a basket in the fourth quarter. Sarah Shroyer's shot with 2:19 remaining finally ended the drought, but PBL relied on the long-range accuracy of guard Jamie Herriott to keep Meridian at bay.

Rachelle Renfro finished with 14 points to lead Meridian, while Brooke Damery added 13 in the loss. The all-tournament team consisted of Audrey Minott, McLain, and Stedman, Clinton's Jenny Koons and Harned, Lexington's Kelli Adams, Meridian's Renfro, and Heyworth's Christina Wright. Shawn Touney can be reached at or at 421-7967. Herald ReviewDennis AAagee Florey, left, posts up a Urbana player Saturday at the Mount Carrollton defeats Olney, takes Thanksgiving Tournament title By SHAWN TOUNEY Staff Writer CLINTON Central coach Dave Fitzgerald has never been one to whisk players in and out of the lineup as if there's no tomorrow. A quick meeting of the eyes between player and coach usually gets the job done.

Heaven forbid a 30-second timeout. Substitutions are few and far between but heartbreaks on the basketball court have been even rarer this season. So rare, that through seven games, the Lady Raiders have left the court a winner seven times. The hot start out of the gates continued Saturday night, as overmatched Clinton 55-39 to win the championship game of the Clinton Thanksgiving Classic. Paxton-Buckley-Loda defeated Meridian 62-53 to win the third place game.

For the core group of five seniors who have played together since middle school has meant all the difference in the world, and it showed against Clinton. "That is the main strength of the team," said Fitzgerald of his team's "As long as they keep playing together, we'll be fine." From the opening tip, Clinton ran into difficulty when feeding the ball inside to center Leslie Harned. clamped down low defensively, getting a hand or two on the ball, and either disrupting the Lady Maroons offense or creating a turnover. Harned did lead Clinton with 16 points, but they didn't come easy. ran into some trouble in the third quarter, as the team bore through a four-minute drought without a basket.

Clinton took advantage to cut the deficit to eight points. Fitzgerald quickly called a six points, but Jenna Ginder (11 points) and Alexis Conley (8 points) picked up the slack for 4-1 Olney. Teutopolis 57, Mount Carmel 45 In the third-place game, Teutopolis beat Mt. Carmel 57-45 to improve to 4-2 on the season. Katie Wendt scored a game-high 20 points, and Lisa Runde and Nikki Bloemer each chipped in 11 points.
