The trolley will operate from 5:15 p.m.

to 7:15 p.m. on the nights of the tournament, and will patrol a loop around Oakland, Wood, Fairview and Eldorado streets near Millikin in search of fans. Those unsure of what lots or streets near Griswold Center are permissible to park at are encouraged to ask working officials and heed street signs. Trolley transportation will not be available once games let out, as tournament organizer Mel Roustio said it would be impractical to do so. The tournament runs tonight, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Those who want a ride will need to flag the trolley down. MacArthur Terell Pearson 6-1 Sr. Justin Berry 6-0 Jr. Name Ht. Yr.

Joiiet made three state-tournament appearances in the 1990s and was 29-2 two years ago. This year's Joiiet team seeks to rebound from a down season behind Ohio recruit Jeremy Fears a versatile, 6-foot-4 guard and five other gifted guards who coach Bob Koskosky deems interchangeable. Joiiet would rumble with Peoria Central in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. if it avoids an opening-round upset against MacArthur on Wednesday. Can the Lions be beat? "If you're ever going to have a chance to beat a really good team, it's early in the year," Koskosky said.

"You're not going to beat them later on." Tonight's two first-round tilts pit Rockford Jefferson against Springfield Lanphier at 6, followed by Limestone versus Eisenhower at 7:30. Jefferson has a huge frontline, which could be problematic for the speedy but diminutive Lions. "We have to look at this as an opportunity to show what we have," said Lanphier coach Jim Youngman. "We have a lot of respect for the field, but we'll have absolutely no fear. We're going there to win." Meanwhile, Eisenhower coach Jeremy Moore considers Limestone a tremendous challenge, but still is relieved not to face Peoria Central, which creamed the Panthers each of the past two tournaments.

"No disrespect to Limestone, but I'd much rather see Shaun and the boys from the stands than on the sidelines, this early in the year anyway," Moore said. A handful of Panthers are banged up, making chances for an upset all the more remote. But Brit Miller who quarterbacked Eisenhower this fall hearkened back to the football season for inspirational fodder. "He said if we can beat Bloomington in football, we can go after Limestone or anyone else good we see in basketball," Moore said. "So the optimism is there." With a number of intriguing storylines set to play out, a tournament that started play in 1970 could produce one of its most compelling versions this year.

The presence of Peoria Central, and Livingston, almost guarantees it. Is the hype that comes with playing alongside a teenage celebrity and on a state champion a little much for the Lions? "I wouldn't trade it for the world," Lee said. Jay Schwab can be reached at jschwab or 421-7971. Continued from B1 "Last year Shaun averaged 15 points a game, took 10 shots a game and he's the best passer on the team," Buescher said. "Why wouldn't his teammates like him?" Senior sharpshooter Jacob Motteler, rugged junior center DeAndre Miranda and 6-foot-6 Peoria Richwoods transfer Dustin Warfield are all capable candidates to pick up what little slack Livingston and the defensive-minded Lee leave.

Buescher worries that the standards fans and media set for his squad might be unattainable. "No matter how well we play, I don't think we're going to satisfy people," Buescher said. "We have to take care of ourselves." Peoria Central opens with Mount Zion on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Braves boast 6-foot-9-inch Mick Yelovich one of five tournament players already committed to a Division I program but would stun most observers if they avoid a pummeling from Peoria Central. "We're going to see some speed we don't see in the Apollo Conference," said Mount Zion coach Albert Lowe.

Perhaps because Joiiet is a new entry this year, several coaches tab the Steel-men as a darkhorse to prevent a title rematch between Peoria Central and nois High School Association placed Hales on probation for a year and suspended its coach, Gary London, until Dec. 14 for alleged recruiting and participation violations. In the September, Hales received worse news. IHSA officials barred the school from playing in the postseason tournament because staff members allegedly held summer workouts in violation of the previous disciplinary ruling. However, Hales will be allowed to defend its title if school officials can show a staff member did not violate the ruling prohibiting summer contact.

Nate Minnoy, Jerod Haynes and Mike Robinson all return from last season's team. Minnoy, still just a junior, and Haynes were named to the Class A All-Tournament team after leading Hales in scoring during the tournament during the title run. "Everybody is out for Hales; that's the only pressure we feel," Minnoy said. Pinckneyville, which has won two state championships in the last eight years, returns four starters to a team that went 19-9 last season. Senior forward Eric Stutes was averaging 14.5 points per game last year for Pinckneyville, which has four players over 6-4.

"I think we have all the ingredients to have a good basketball team," coach Dick Corn said. "We've got some size, some athleticism. Now, whether we can get that to blend together, and get people to understand their roles as they are and not what they want them to be that's the question." Class A poll 1.
