erSOIl Who GxitMatters. United Way TURKEY Continued from B1 So it wasn't all bad for the Panthers, who have until Friday to correct their offensive woes. C.J. Carson, who lead the Panthers with nine points, thinks the team will be OK. "We'll work hard (today) in practice and come back out Friday and play hard again," said Carson.

"We didn't play very good tonight, but I saw some good things. We set some tight picks and we didn't give up. We'll be alright. We'll just keep getting better." Rockford Jefferson 69, Springfield Lanphier 67, OT Nothing like an 11-point comeback to turn a ho-hum game into a highlight. The early game Tuesday pitted Springfield Lanphier against Rockford Jefferson and it was like watching a movie that you've already figured out the end to.

Lanphier led by as many as 11 points and was ahead by nine with 2:20 left in the game and the J-Hawks 6-foot-10 center Pat Nelson had fouled out of the game, leaving everyone to anticipate the DeAaron Williams show. But then Ricky Ellis took over. Ellis scored 12 of his 27 SViT. ZION Continued from B1 Mount Zion (2-0) also forced 20 Tuscola turnovers. It helped the Braves grab a quick 8-0 lead and simply cruise from there.

"I don't know how many layups we got, but the defensive pressure kind of set the tone tonight," Steers said. "With the kind of team we have this year, I think we've got to use our defense to get some scoring for us, so I was glad to see that." Kelley Steers led the way with 28 points, and nearly had a perfect game. She was 12-of-13 from the field her only miss coming on an errant 3-point attempt. She also hit all three of her free throws. "We just came out and we all played really good," Kelley said.

"We came out ready to play. That was our main thing, I think." Tuscola (1-2) is a small Class A school, and one of only two Class A schools in the eight-team field. Warriors coach Stan Wienke used an 11-person rotation six of which were sophomores. Wienke knows Tuscola could endure a few tough games before the tournament is over. It's part of the reason why the Warriors are in the field.

"It's a long learning year when you play teams that are good. We'll be OK against average teams, but we came over here to play good people. "We could get beat like that every game (in the tournament), but it's going to be better for them in the end," Wienke said. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin beat MacArthur 79-47 in the second game of the night. Blazers coach Dave Farris summed up the game in one word: ugly.

It was a rough game for 1 provide much needed services to the community such as Meals on Wheels for senior citizens, day care for people who would be unable to work without a caring place to leave their children, and shelter for the homeless. Troy Hayes can be reached at or at 421-6970. both teams, but more so for MacArthur. The Generals (0-2) committed 40 turnovers, and lost starting point guard Amber Mann to an apparent sprained ankle in the fourth quarter. SHG, meanwhile, committed 21 turnovers of its own and shot a dismal 39 percent from the field (39-of-81).

"We're not real big, so we've got to scrap and fight for everything. Tonight we did that," Ferris said. MacArthur seemed in a rush all evening, and never could settle itself down. It started in the first quarter, when both teams managed to reach the bonus less than seven minutes into the game. It ended in the fourth quarter with the Generals committing 12 turnovers.

"It was basically our lack of patience, and we just got out hustled, period," MacArthur coach Eric Newbon said. "That really got us in a bind. We've got a lot of young, inexperienced players. Inexperience, and not having patience, that will kill you every time."
