SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1,2002 DECATUR, ILLINOIS SPORTS C3 preps Dm thir Behrns, Westendorf help Dieterich to tourney title By KYLE BAUER Staff Writer i-prac pus 1 vmmmm, i staff reports i 4 -i 4 I 'v i i 4. j-' i i if DECATUR The Mount Zion basketball team is ly breathing a sigh of relief. The Braves ended a rough 24-hour stretch in which they played two of the state's top five teams with a 62-52 defeat at the hands of Springfield Lanphier on Saturday in the third-place game of the Decatur Basketball Turkey Tournament. On Friday, Mount Zion lost to Peoria Central, 75-39. "I thought our effort was just not very good on (Friday) and we corrected that," Mount Zion coach Albert Lowe said.

"What we tried to do differently was we pushed the ball down and went at them a little bit and made them guard us." In the consolation championship game, MacArthur took control early and only got stronger as the game went on en route to a 69-51 win over Eisenhower. Mount Zion made good use of its distinct height advantage with Michael Sams (6-foot-6) and Mick Yelovich (6-8) combining to score half of Mount Zion's 52 points from the lane. Yelovich finished with a team-high 20 while Sams added 12. "We knew their height would cause us some problems," Lanphier coach Craig Patton said. "That's why we went into our matchup zone.

When there are two of them underneath there that are 6-8 and 6-6, we don't match up well against them. And both of them are fine players." But those points in the paint were offset by Lanphi-er's Richard McBride. The University of Illinois-bound senior dropped in a game-high 33 points on the Braves. "When he has the ball in his hand, he is awfully talented," Lowe said. "We try to put our biggest, athletic kid on him and challenge him.

We thought if we could keep him in the 20-25 range, we would be OK." Sams drew the task of trying to shut down McBride and saw limited success. Sams held the height advantage but struggled to stay with the speedy McBride. "It's a big task to have to guard him and also have to help out on offense," Sams said. "I was putting a lot of effort into defense. Our offense isn't all me, but everybody on the floor has to go out there and help out on offense.

It took a little bit away, but we have to be able to do that for the big teams." Senior Nick Birkey chipped in 15 points, all from 3-point-ers, for the Braves. "They are a good ball club," Patton said. "Birkey hurt us a little from the outside. They did a nice job of finding him when we were in our zona" Austin Bussard 1 0-0 2, Adam Bussard 7 3-3 22, Campbell 1 0-0 2, Shonert 5 0-2 10, Mitchell 4 6-6 15, McDowell 0 0-0 0, fisher 0 0-0 0, Barry 0 0-00. Kyle Bauer can be reached at or MacArthur's Anthony Smith caused the most problems for Eisenhower as he poured in a game-high 20 points. Smith had an answer for everything the Panthers did.

Early in the second half, Eisenhower cut into MacArthur's lead with a dunk by Kyle Phillips. Smith calmly answered with a 3-pointer followed by a lay-in to extend the Generals' lead to a more comfortable 33-24. "We couldn't stop Anthony Smith," Eisenhower coach Jeremy Moore said. "After the dunk, we had all of the momentum. And then Smith comes down and killed us right afterward." Eisenhower hung with MacArthur through much of the first half until an 11-3 run gave the Generals a 28-18 cushion at the break.

After that, it was all MacArthur. "I was happy the way they played in the second half," MacArthur coach Clark Barnes said. "In the first half, we didn't play tough. And when you don't play tough, you allow teams to stay with you that shouldn't. In the second half, we played good defense and put pressure on them.

Our inside game was pretty good when we got the ball in there. We did enough to cause some problems." easy time in Power outage suspends top high school player's opener Lincoln has staff reports LINCOLN Lincoln continued to stay hot by taking down East St. Louis and Rantoul on Saturday to capture the Lincoln Round Robin championship. James, widely acknowledged as the best high school basketball player in the country, and his Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary teammates had their season opener cut short by a power outage Saturday night. The Division II Fighting Irish were up 45-10 over Well-ston, a Division III school from southern Ohio, with 47 seconds left in the first half when the lights went out. "It's very disappointing," coach Dru Joyce said when the game was suspended after a 45-minute wait.

"I honestly want to finish. I'm willing to sit here two or three hours to do so, but the power company said something about a five-hour wait." Referee Steve Blankenship said the decision to suspend the game was an agreement between athletic directors and coaches from both schools. FirstEnergy the utility serving northeast Ohio, said about 500 customers were without power, but the cause was not yet known. The game was one of only two the nationally ranked St. Vincent-St.

Mary was to play in its own gym this season. Usually, the Irish play home games at the nearby University of Akron. They also are playing a coast-to-coast schedule against the best prep schools in the nation. The reason for the packed schedule is James, a 6-foot-8 senior who already has two state titles, two Ohio Mr. Basketball awards and a Sports Illustrated cover.

Senior Romeo Travis, a center already committed to play for Akron, was the game's leading scorer at the time of the blackout, while James had 11 points..
