Yes, it's "Abe," a Decatur curiosity, the man who walked and walked and walked day and night, downtown, east side, at the Illinois State Fair. The man who is a look-alike for Abraham Lincoln and wore a stovepipe hat to be sure you noticed. "I'm not mentally ill, I'm just paralyzed," "Abe" assures visitors in a booming voice which is instantly recognizable. "I'd like to walk. I can't." He looks frail.

His Lincolnesque face is thin, the beard is white. This is in a room "Abe" shares with another man named Donald on the fifth floor of McKinley Terrace on North Monroe Street, the nursing home previously known as Illini House and Monroe House. "Thanks for coming," "Abe" says while shaking hands. "I remember you at the Commodores' games and at the Eisenhower games." THAT'S RIGHT. I was sports editor then.

"Abe" routinely congratulated me on my writing whenever we met. He was about the only one to do so, meaning we were pals. "Abe" sat in the front row behind the screen at Fans Field when the Decatur Commodores played minor league baseball. According to Herald Review library clippings, he was married for one month in the 1940s before the marriage was annulled at her insistence. "Abe" is wound up, eager to tell the visitors about Eisenhower and riding a bicycle from Decatur to New York City and back. Some of his tales are fantasy he says he cheered Eisenhower to the state championship in 1936.

The bicycle trip is a fact it happened in 1936. BEFORE THE visitors leave, "Abe" reminds us that he is worried about his collection of Lincoln photos more than 1,000, according to Herald Review clippings. The collection was in the house where he lived with his mother on South Maffit Street. The house has been demolished. "Abe" need not worry about the photos.

Some of the photos are in storage, some are in the care of the Macon County Historical Society Museum, according to Ritchie Barnett of the First National Bank of Decatur. The bank handles "Abe's" affairs. As we shake hands all around, "Abe" tells Steven Evans, the new McKinley Terrace administrator: "Your twinkling eye brightens my day." That's vintage "Abe." Evans conducted a tpur of McKinley Terrace, purchased in 1987 by Decatur Memorial Hospital Community Services Corp. and now being remodeled. "Abe" is often visited by Vicki Epperson, the nursing home's activity director.

"Abe" never missed a game. He was a Millikin fan, too. "How's Abe?" major league ball players inquired whenever Decatur was mentioned. Nobody could forget "Abe." So we thought. Then "Abe" dropped out of sight in 1981 when he entered St.
