Decatur, Illinois Friday, October 13, 1995 CENTRAL ILLINOISSTATE A9 (ItHIB ABB Tylenol to he tee CHICAGO (AP) The out-of-work accountant convicted of trying to extort money from the makers of Tylenol during the 1982 murders that gripped this city and the nation will be a free man today. The murders changed the way non-prescription drugs are packaged in the United States. The killer was never identified, but James W. Lewis has been in prison since 1983 on the attempted extortion charge and an unrelated conviction. Authorities planned to release Lewis, 49, from federal prison in El Reno, this morning.

From Sept. 29 until Oct. 1, 1982, seven people including a 12-year-old girl and a flight attendant in her 20s died from cyanide-tainted Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules purchased from drug stores and groceries in the Chicago area. In December, Lewis was arrested at a New York library after a two-month manhunt. The killer was never identified.

On June 14, 1983, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for demanding $1 million from Johnson Johnson, parent of Tylenol man- Parks COWDEN Bessie L. "to stop the killing." He also received a 10-year prison sentence in a Kansas City tax fraud case. Lewis admitted writing the letter the government used as the centerpiece of its Tylenol case. But Lewis said he never intended to collect the $1 million, he only wanted to embarrass his wife's former employer by having the money sent to the employer's bank account. "It was an interesting case. I wish him well.

I hope he gets on with his life. He has served his punishment," Lewis' defense attorney, Michael Monico, said Thursday in a telephone interview. Lewis was considered a leading suspect in the murders but was never charged directly with the deaths. Tom Schumpp, the state police officer who headed the government's investigation, says he strongly believed Lewis was the killer. The deaths toughened criminal penalties for tampering with consumer products and contributed to the growth of inter-agency police intelligence.
