Decatur, Illinois, Sunday, IVovember 23, IV a DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW 18 Accurate Shooting I 'Must' for Millikin Carter, Roth, Sangster Holdovers at Eisenhower Kupish Lakeview Holdover 'ftp? I Iff fr" "sit kLJitr tv -s. Jtt By Rex Spires Lakeview High School basketball Coach Don Walker figures he will be going from the long to the short of things in terms of squad height. The graduation of 6-foot-8 Doug Semisch among others from last season's team that finished with an 11-13 record, leaves Lakeview without a player over 6-3. "I was looking at the Mount Auburn roster in the paper the other day and they had two kids 6-3. Heck, my driver education class is probably bigger than the Mount Auburn enrollment and I don't have two kids 6-3," Walker said.

Lakeview has three let-termen, including last season's standout sophomore Dave Kupish, who Walker says has shown marked improvement in early practices. The 6-2 Kupish averaged close to 15 points a game and was the team's second leading rebounder, only slightly behind Semisch who is six inches taller. The other lettermen are Gary Newlin, a top reserve last season, who has added an inch to become Lakeview's tallest player at 6-3, and Bill Stewart. "We've got a lot of unknown quantities," Walker says. "I think we'll just have to get a few games under our belt to really find out who can play.

"Right now, it looks like one of those seasons where several kids will get to share the playing time rather than five or six playing 90 per cent of the time," he added. "We're going to be green even when we're not wearing out road uniforms," Walker summed up, referring to his squad's general inexperience and the school colors of green and white. Joining Semisch among the graduated was all-city selection Ray Goodman. ROSTER jf i yJi. if a JfA hwf' JjT "KSjr 1 II-, 4 si- ti if 'C4- ft Ulrtfl By Rex Spires Eisenhower High School's basketball team overcame its perennial role of bridesmaid at tournament time last March by advancing to the "Sweet 16." This time Eisenhower wants the honevmoon too the "Elite Eight" field of the large school tournament in the Assembly Hall.

With three starters and two top reserves returning from last season's squad, Eisenhower figures to once again reach the dizzying status it enjoyed last season when it was ranked among the state's top teams. Heading the returnees are smooth shooting Hubert Carter, 15.3 points average, and Jeff Roth, leading rebounder last season. Roth averaged 13.7 points and 10 rebounds. Deadly outcourt shooter Charles Sangster, who averaged 12 points, also returns, along with Dave Hood, top replacement in the front line, and Don Barr, a reserve a 1 1 -handler. "If I had to pick a first five today, it would be those five lettermen," said Coach Bob Witt who has never had a losing season in his six at Eisenhower.

His career record stands at an enviable 114-52. Witt was Herald and Review city "coach of the year" for the fifth straight time, while Carter and Roth joined since-graduated Jim Oldham on the all-city first team. Oldham, Eisenhower's top scorer with a 16.5 average, was "city player of the year." Graduating with Oldham was starter Chuck Hyder. "Despite a lack of real size we don't have an up-perclassman taller than 6-4 we won't have trouble scoring. All of these kids shoot well," Witt said.

Witt has one sophomore joining in the battle for front-line reserve roles, Doug Banton, 6-5 transfer from Warrensburg at mid-year last year, who he wants to gain varsity experience. "Our squad set a goal of 20 victories," Witt said. "I think that's realistic." There's little doubt that Eisenhower will at least be the dominant power among city teams. En route to its 23-7 record last season, Eisenhower captured a third straight Decatur Thanksgiving Classic championship and seventh straight regional championship. Then there's sophomore Ben Beck, whom Ramsey thinks has the physical ability to provide good guard play, and Ricky Carter, 6-3 junior transfer.

"We're approaching that point of finding out what some people can and can't do in certain positions," Ramsey said. letterman SCHEDULE Nov. 25-29 Decatur Thonksgiving By Forrest R. Kyle Review Sports Editor Millikin opens the basketball season against Illinois College 10 days from now and Coach Joe Ramsey says, "We need to make 1 the most of every day." The flu bug has been feasting on several of the players, complicating Ramsey's job of smoothing put a system of play which will compensate for the over-all lack of height. "I thought we looked a little better in actual play a week or so ago," Ramsey said after Monday's intrasquad game at Cerro Gordo, "than we did tonight but it could be that the flu bug has cut info us some. We've never really a full squad on the practice floor for There are nine-H varsity players between 6-foot-3 and 6-5, not especially big Jby today's college standards.

"We'lHry to use movement, ball and high percentage shots to overcome this lack of height," Ramsey said. "With our size situation I think we're going to Ibave to shoot somewhere near 50 per cent as a team," Ramsey said. "We're going to put a premium on getting good shots. "Defensively I prefer to play man-for-man but obviously there will be teams we play where we're going to have to go to a zone because we don't have anyone to defense a good tall post man." As for who is going to be doing most of the playing in the early stages of the season, it's obvious that two of the front-liners will be senior Lou Baxter and junior Tim Littrell. "Littrell played as well as any of the established players at Cerro Gordo," Ramsey said.

"He works hard and plays relatively free of mistakes, which is what I'm looking for. "Baxter missed some practice time but he has rebounded well. There's no question both will have to contribute quite a ait on the front line." Ramsey says it appears likely right now that the third frontliner will be a freshman Dave Pistorius, Bart Fun-neman or Rich Rames. Funneman was the most impressive of the three last Monday night but Ramsey said "you can't draw any definite conclusions from one scrimmage. But Bart does seem to have a natural talent for being around the ball." A fourth freshman, Tim Currinder, 6-5, likely will get a MacArthur By Rex Spires MacAr'hur High School basketball Coach Ray DeMoulin faces the unenviable task of trying to build a winner from a predominantly green squad that has only two let-term en.

Of the returnees, Rick Min-ton, a Herald and Review "all-city" selection, will have to take on more of a scoring role in addition to his playmaking duties. The other letterman, Tom Luttrell, was a reserve last season but figures to see considerable action this time. DeMoulin has elevated three sophomores to the varsity, at least for the time being, in an effort to acquire height. Two of the sophs, 6 foot 5 Tom Fisher and 6-3 Bill Foreman, are the tallest players on the squad. "We've been doing some experimenting, trying several different combinations in an effort to come up with the group that seems to play the best together," DeMoulin said.

DeMoulin, MacArthur's only basketball coach since the school opened in 1957, hinted he may consider going to more of a running game. "Actually, we've been trying Convicted Orlando, Fla.
