(Bob Fallstrom provided this fond remembrance of Gay Kintner Friday night at the dedication of Kintner Gym II in Stephen Decatur High School) Gay Kintner is gone. Kintner Gym is gone. Gay Kinter was an original.

So was Kintner Gym. There is no replacing Gay Kintner. At least we can assure that the Kintner heritage never does. By dedicating another Kintner Gym. Kintner Gym II.

Let me tell you about Gay kintner. Gay Kintner slumped to the floor in front of the Stephen Decatur bench while Stephen Decatur and MacArthur were warming up for the second half of a basketball game Feb. 15, 1960 at Mac-Arthur. Gay Kintner never regained consciousness. Gay Kintner was dead.

"It can't be," cried a Stephen Decatur fan, breaking into tears. As Gay Kintner was being wheeled to an ambulance, a bystander said: "There goes the best man this town has ever seen." Indeed, Gay Kintner was a legend In high school basketball. He coached Decatur High into the No. 1 team in the state. Kintner Gym, the original Kintner Gym, was built because of the popularity of Kintner's teams.

After Decatur won the state championship in 1936 for the second time and was runnerup in 1937, the Armory would no longer hold the crowds which demanded to see Gay Kintner's teams play. So a new gym, seating 4,200, was built. It was filled for almost every game. After Decatur won the 1945 state championship, the gym was officially named "Kintner Gym." Gay Kintner's teams won 649 games in 32 years. Still, the scent of victory was ever fresh.

Gay Kintner was in ill health much of the season just before he died; he had a persistent cold and a racking cough. Yet he wanted one more shot at the state championship. When Gay Kintner died, Decatur had a 16-2 record, and was No. 9 in the Asso- Colorado's Beck sets scoring record Denver (AP) Barry Beck set the National Hockey League record for goals by a rookie de-fenseman Friday night, scoring his 18th to cap the three-goal Colorado second period that led the Rockies to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars. Bob Neely scored at 1:56 of the session to tie the contest 11.

Gary Croteau put the Rockies ahead exactly a minute later, then Beck netted a slap shot at 8:42 to surpass the record of 17 set by the New York Islanders' Denis Potvin in 1973-74. North Stars center BUI Hogaboam connected at 17:18 of the second period to bring Minnesota within 3-2, but the Rockies survived a 13-shot Minnesota attack in the third period to record the victory. Jim Roberts had given Minnesota a 1-0 lead at 5:01 of the first period. The victory moved Colorado within 2 points of second-place Vancouver in the Smythe Division. The fourth-place North Stars trail Colorado by seven points.

Eventually, Decatur finished fourth in the state tournament with John Schneiter and Jack Kenny as co-coaches. The eulogy of Gay Kintner, delivered before 3,500 mourners in Kintner Gym, focused on this truth: "Coach Kintner believed in the essential worth of children and youth without regard to their color or creed." They tell about Gay Kintner giving his needy players money for meals, money for shoes, money for a suit of clothes. He wanted to win, sure.

He also wanted the players to win in the more important game of life. Wanting to win meant hard work. Gay Kintner spent countless hours in scouting trips. Many times he out-maneuvered the opposing coach because of the scouting trips. Many of you remember Gay Kintner: His machine-gun voice.

The twinkle in his eye. Crouching near the bench, intent on the game. Chalking a play on the floor. Holding his head in his hands when a player goofed. One night above all was unique in Kintner Gym.

The Father vs. Son game. Stephen Decatur, coached by Gay Kintner, played Eisenhower, coached by Gay Kintner's son Galen. A long shot by Linford Coleman gave Stephen Decatur a 54-53 victory. Gay Kintner and Galen Kintner rushed into each other's arms.

It was a sentimental occasion. Like this. For those of us who knew him, Gay Kintner is unforgettable, 18 years after he slumped over in front of the Stephen Decatur bench. Now we have another Kintner Gym. May Kintner Gym II stand forever.
