Grounding affects thousands By The Associated Press Airlines rolled out reserve planes and rerouted thousands of passengers Wednesday as the sudden grounding of all U.S. DC-lOs bumped 60,000 to 70,000 people from hundreds of flights.

Travelers grew wary, vacations were disrupted and business appointments were missed as the 138 wide-bodied jets were ordered back to the hangars for more safety inspections. "I wonder what else is flying around up there with cracks in it," mused Nick Kontras, a San Diego attorney, as he waited at Los Angeles International Airport for American Airlines to substitute a Boeing 707 for his flight. On the other side of the country, at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, Peter Mattes of Long Beach, was among 151 passengers switched from a DC-10 to an American Airlines Boeing 707 for a flight to San Francisco. "I wish they would ground them for good because this hit and miss, up again, down again, makes everybody nervous," he said.

The Air Transport Association said that of 800.000 persons flying in this country each day, between 60,000 and 70,000 ride DC-lOs. While hundreds of flights were canceled, the airlines dusted off reserve aircraft, such as those normally used for charter flight, and routed passengers on other carriers. United Airlines, for example, which has 30 DC-lOs in its fleet, had to scrub 125 flights but managed to substitute other airplanes for 13 of them. Western Airlines uses nine DC-lOs, mainly on long flights from Los Angeles to Hawaii, Mexico and Florida, and spokeswoman Linda Dozier said, "It's certainly fair to say at least 3,000 to 4,000 passengers will be affected." United said it would have nine flights to Hawaii, instead of the usual 12. A long line of DC-lOs sat idle in a line at Miami International Airport, like great birds at roost, and Richard Hayes Meagher, a businessman trying to return home to Sydney, Australia, was fuming.

"The airlines ought to bloody well know what's happening before they start running passengers all over the bloody terminal," he groused. Meagher said he had checked with the airline earlier in the morning but when he got to the terminal he discovered his flight had been scrubbed. Most foreign airlines, which operate half of the wide-bodied jets built by McDonnell Douglas, also grounded their planes. On Wednesday the Federal Aviation Administration said it will bar all foreign-operated DC-lOs from U.S. airspace.

That put Freddie Laker's Skytrain, which offers cut-rate fares between London and New York, temporarily out of business. James E. Dunn, head of the Airline Passengers Association, said the defects discovered in the engine mounts on the DC-lOs "have been alarming to everyone in the industry." "The defects that have been noticed in the various parts of the engine support systems must lead one to the conclusion that if there is that much smoke there may be some fire," Dunn said Wednesday in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. The sudden FAA order was based on the discovery of hairline cracks in the engine mounts of two DC-lOs in San Francisco, planes whose engine mounts had already been inspected. Joe Daley, vice president of Continental Airlines which had to ground 15 DC-10s, said his airline normally operates 50 flights a day out of Los Angeles.

"We do not have any extra equipment at this time to replace them," he said. David Frailey, a spokesman for American Airlines in New York, said, "We will try our best either to carry passengers on other kinds of airplanes or put them on other airlines. Some people will be inconvenienced. There's no question about it." In Minneapolis, Roy Erickson, a spokesman for Northwest Orient, said a grounding order by U.S. District Judge Aubrey Robinson which preceded the FAA order, was "completely unwarranted." CHIMU WROTE ON LIMA BEANS One of the most unusual letter-writing systems in the world was invented by the Chimu tribes of northeast Peru, according to Alain de Cadenet, consultant for the British Post Office.

The Chimu created a system of writing codes which they inscribed on lima beans.
