Below, Eisenhower's Jeremy Robinson wraps a pass around Carbondale's Will Warren. The teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Friday's semifinals. SCRAP staff reports CUMBERLAND Wade Nevergall hit three 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and Colton Booher added 15 as St.

Elmo rallied past the hosts for a 58-54 win Wednesday at the Cumberland Tournament. The Eagles hit 10-of-14 free throws, including one after a Nevergall 3-pointer for a four-point play, in the fourth quarter to help sustain the rally. "It was really exciting tonight," St. Elmo coach Greg Feezel said. "We had a long talk between the third and fourth quarter and decided to stop worrying about other factors and just play our game.

Then we had a couple of big plays." Bob Fritcher added 10 points for the Eagles (2-0). Darin Worman led the Maroons (1-1) with 17 points. Brock Zumbahlen and Nick Nosbisch both added 10 points. St. Elmo 58, Dieterich 54 St.

The game was a welcome relief over practice for the Panthers. "We'll take it. We were so tired of practicing against each other," coach Chris Seider said. "It was just nice getting on a floor with someone else." Gabby Seals added eight, and Tiara Thomas six for Eisenhower (1-0). Liz Barter scored 10 to lead the Braves (0-2).

Anthony flips switch, rallies past Charleston staff reports EFFINGHAM -Charleston seemingly was going to overcome Jamel Johnson's foul trouble and its six third-quarter turnovers. Johnson returned after missing more than six minutes of the third period for a basket, starting a streak of 11 straight fourth-quarter points for the Trojans, who suddenly were trailing by just four points and 5:28 left to take care of that. Matt Britton knew something had to change. So the point guard for Eastern Illinois' 2001 NCAA tournament basketball team and first-year Effingham St. Anthony coach changed his Bulldogs' defense to a zone.

Anthony free throw. Turnover. St. Anthony basket. The Bulldogs (2-0) had answered Charleston's comeback bid and were on their way to Wednesday's 62-49 win at the St.

Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament. "They were really coming at us at the beginning of the fourth quarter," Britton said. "Charleston kept playing. They had a lot of kids making shots. I thought our zone helped us in the fourth quarter.

I just thought we were having a tough time covering both Johnson and (Trey) Ryan man-to-man. Charleston had trouble with St. Anthony's balance, led by the 13-point game from senior forward Danny Winkler. Jordan Schmidt added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Johnson, who did not get his first basket until early in the second half, finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Charleston, which is 1-1 going into a 3:30 p.m.

Taylorville 36, Vandalia 33 EFFINGHAM Josh Beyers scored 13, and Jonathan Yard added 10 as Taylorville grabbed its first win of the season. While happy with the win, coach Brent Bond wasn't overjoyed with the way his team played. "We didn't get to the line much, and when we did get there, we didn't take advantage," Bond said of his team's 0-for-5 free-throw shooting night. "We'll have to have success there if we are going to have success this season." The Tornadoes (1-1) jumped to an eight-point third quarter lead and held on down the stretch. "We can play better, we played much better last night (in a loss)," Bond said.

Continued from B1 gave up some size to Lanphier, as they will to most opponents. Yet they had a 36-23 edge in rebounds and forced 13 turnovers. "Every day, we do box-out drills. Everyone's got to step up and get the boards," Yelovich said. Jordan Grinestaff and Colby Long chipped in with eight points apiece in a game that at times was more reminiscent of a rugby match not that the Braves minded too much.

"It's better," Colby Long said with a smile. "We don't have to beat up on each other anymore." Next up is another rough-and-tumble affair, this time against Macon County rival and top-seeded Eisenhower. "It's going to be a great atmosphere, and we're just really looking forward to taking on that kind of challenge," Driscoll said. Eisenhower 85, Carbondale 58 Fine-tuning and the pursuit of perfection are part of a coach's makeup. Because of that, Eisenhower coach Jeremy Moore wasn't pleased with the number of points Carbondale scored.

Everything else about the Panthers' debut was as good as advertised. Lewis Jackson led an offense that featured five double-digit scorers with 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Jeremy Robinson (13 points, five rebounds, four blocks), Drew Washington (12 points, seven steals), Terveris Smith (11 points, three assists) and Brock Von Nordeck (10 points) got in on the fun as well. "When we finally got somebody new to beat up on, we got all excited," Jackson said. "I was proud for the younger guys.

This team, we try to come right out of the gate and put them away early." Eisenhower (1-0) wasted no time, torching Carbondale with a 15-2 run to begin the game. The Terriers (0-1) still trailed by 19 points at half-time, despite connecting on seven 3-pointers. LiNcoy Continued from B1 its lead back to 11 in the five-minute drought. "That seemed like forever," Brackney said of the Railers' scoring lull. "We were getting tight and not really moving the ball much.

It wasn't how we want to play, that's for sure." The seven makes on the night aren't bad pretty good actually. It's the misses, and more importantly, how they came that was disappointing. "We didn't attack them at all," said senior Jacob Harnacke, who scored 10. "We settled for 3s, and they weren't very good 3s." Usually the Railers can weather a drought like they had in the fourth quarter with steals and turnovers created with their trademark 1-2-2 defense. But even that wasn't very imposing to the Chargers on this night.

Centennial broke the press repeatedly with patient, arcing passes and pinpoint bounce feeds. The ball movement resulted in the Chargers hitting 24 of Holiday Open Mouse WEJT live remote Friday 11 am-1 pm Monicals Pizza refreshments jxepresenuuivcs nuin: Woodwick Demdaco Vera Bradley Stationary Coke! The Panthers produced plenty of fireworks, but the highlight of the half came when Jackson bounced a drop pass between his legs and right to Robinson, who slammed home the assist with one hand. "It was good to get the jitters out on a team not from in town. There's not so much pressure on us younger cats, because we were kind of nervous," Von Nordeck said. "We could've played better on the defensive end, and coach strives for that.

But for a first game, I think we played real good, and all we can do is keep getting better." Eisenhower is deep and balanced, and it all was on display against Carbondale. "People who aren't familiar with us don't realize what we have. They think we're just Lewis and Jeremy. The crowd saw tonight we're more than just them," Moore said. "It didn't surprise me that we jumped out like that.

It surprised me that we went a little dead defensively, but 40 shots from the field. "I knew our shooting was good tonight, but I didn't know it was that good," Centennial coach Tim Lavin said. "We made the extra pass and four or five straight possessions got dribbled and got some dink baskets and drop-off passes." Still the Railers clawed their way back to just three points down with 27 seconds left. Louie Schonauer scored seven points in a 36-second span to lead the way, but Centennial worked a lay-in bucket and hit enough free throws to hold the Railers at bay. "It's disappointing.

We're not a team that can be inconsistent like that," Harnacke said, referring to the team's 12-of-23 performance from beyond the arc on Monday. "We have to shoot it well every night. Making seven 3s isn't a bad night it's the 20-some misses that hurt. Especially with the hole we put ourselves in. We can't do that and expect to win many games."
