Waiting for word I had gone to an early morning meeting of the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur and Macon County on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. When we got out of the meeting at 8:30, Sue, the receptionist, gave us a troubled look and said, "A plane just flew into the World Trade Center.

I just heard it on the radio." I felt a vague uneasiness since I knew our son, Craig, then a consultant with Deloitte Touche in New York -iff 7 1 3 1 N. 40... 1 yrttfj City, worked in a building very near the center. I couldn't recall how close, but I knew he lived in the upper west side of the city and took the downtown subway to work every morning. I remember saying, "I think that's where my son works" as I hurried out of the office.

I punched all the radio buttons on the way to my office, hearing the same thing on every station. There was confusion, lack of knowledge of what was happening, and the anxiety we feel when things are out of our control. When I got to the office, others had already heard the news, and we turned on the TV we use for viewing training videos. The office didn't have cable, but we could get good enough reception from WAND that I saw the second plane hit the tower. For the next 90 minutes, I called Craig's cell phone, his apartment and his work number.

I got either "all circuits busv" or no answer at all. I just sat at my desk, helpless, not knowing what to do and almost physically sick. Around 10 a.m., the phone rang. I heard, "Dad, I'm OK," and then I just lost it. The unmistakable sound of his voice undid all the control I had been exerting to try to stay calm. Craig explained he had stayed uptown not far from where he lived to make a presentation in another office of his company, so he was at least a mile or more north of the World Trade Center.

He'd tried to call, but all cell phones had been blocked, and it took him that long to get through on a land line. I called Carol and shared the news. Later, he told us that he took the subway to the World Trade Center stop and walked through the Aisle of Palms every morning, getting coffee there before walking across the skyway to the American Express Building across the street from the center. That morning, it was just fate that he wasn't there. The blast blew the windows in on his building, so if he had followed his normal routine, he definitely would have been in danger.

He said that walking through the World Trade Center on the way to work made him feel special and happy to be in the big city, but he never again felt that way after 911. Getting coffee at the Aisle of Palms was once a morning ritual for Craig Hazenfield, but on the morning of 911 he was making a presentation at another company office about a mile north of the World Trade Center when the towers were destroyed. Or! I 1 another trip planned to New York City. This time, we would be visiting Ground Zero. It was my goal on this trip to take another picture of the New York skyline from the same spot on Ellis Island that I had taken just four years before. I was able to accomplish that goal and have shared my pictures of "before" and "after" Sept.

11, 2001, with many people every year in September. I have both pictures framed on my office wall, and not a day goes by that I don't remember both my trips to New York City and the tragedy that happened Sept. 11, 2001. In the attached pictures, note the helicopter in the "before" picture along the far right edge of the picture and the different direction that the flag is blowing in each picture. The flag is actually on Ellis Island.

I realize this memory is anything but short, but I wanted to give you some history regarding the two pictures. The view from the top The year is 2000 and the month is October. My wife, Patty, and I are on our yearly vacation away from our jobs as a bank teller and police officer in Greenup. We have been to Washington, D.C., where we visited the various memorials on the Mall, the Capitol building and, of course, the Pentagon.

We have been to New Jersey to visit and tour the lighthouses, and now we are in the city so nice they named it twice, New York, New York. It is a whirlwind tour of the city, as our vacation is winding down. We chose a tour company to take us to all the best spots by bus. We went to the Empire State Building, Sachs 5th Avenue, the Statue of Liberty, NBC Studios, Broadway and to the place I had wanted to go to the most, the World Trade Center. I had always been amazed at the height of these majestic buildings and how they stood out on the New York skyline.

The tour bus driver told our group that there were more locations to go to or we could choose to stay and go to the top of the towers. This was a no-brainer, though it took a little time to convince my wife that she would be fine on top of the buildings. VIEWD2 J5- i 'Before' and 'after' I'm not a person who can usually remember what I was doing yesterday, let alone what I was doing five years ago. But on Sept. 11, 2001, 1 think most Americans can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the first plane that hit the World Trade Center.

For me, the day started off as usual. I got myself ready for work and my kids ready for school. I happen to work at the school that my children attend. I arrived at school at 7:30 and decided to sell yearbooks to the high school students before school started at 8:15. When classes started, I came back to my office and sat down to begin my work.

It was around that time that I heard a radio station announce that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Then, when it was announced that a second plane had hit the other tower, I knew this was no accident. Teachers started bringing televisions to the classrooms for their students to watch history unfold before their eyes. Most classes that day were held around a television set. For many of our high school students and some of our staff (including myself), we were remembering our trip to New York City just less than one year ago in May 2000 when we drove down the streets of Manhattan.

Many of us remember seeing the street signs that were being flashed on the news. We didn't visit the World Trade Center, but we drove within a couple of blocks of it on that trip. I remembered taking a picture of the New York skyline while standing on Ellis Island. I was pretty sure that the World Trade Center was in this picture. I searched through my files and found the picture.

I printed a copy and hung it in my office that day. Before the end of that week, everyone was asking for copies of that picture to hang in their classroom or office. I have my picture framed on my office wall. In May 2004, our high school had 2. Twister King Footsie 3.
