I i Zion guard Tiffa- Schichner during the second round of the Lady Forsyth's Janet Brave Classic Friday at Mount Zion High School. 32 sparks Sullivan Mattoon defeats Mac-Arthur Continued from D1 wold Center. It's not that Peoria Central is an unfriendly bunch. In fact Coach Chuck Buescher and his gang of quick-footed players have been perfect gentlemen. Maybe a little too perfect.

From 1984-88 Peoria ran off with four straight tourney titles and now with two victories by a combined 59 points have to be favored for another crown heading into tonight's 8 p.m. title game with Paris. Paris advanced to the championship with a 57-47 win over Stephen Decatur in Friday's other night game. "We're looking forward to the fchallenge, the unenviable task, of (today)," Paris Coach Jerry Fulk Said, shaking his head and grinning. "It ought to be a lot of fun." Fulk was able to smile about the prospects after watching his team top Stephen Decatur in a hard-fought contest.

Stephen Decatur had opened a 17-12 first-quarter lead as Michael Bond and Scott Livingston combined for 12 points and 5 rebounds. But in the second quarter, the Paris defense stiffened and Stephen Decatur lost its shooting touch, going just 2-for-ll and falling behind 28-24 by halftime. The team never led again. "That's the story right there, Wor-11," Stephen Decatur Coach Rease Binger said. "That really hurt us, but we didn't die." 1 Not immediately, anyway.

Paris opened the second half with three straight buckets to take its biggest lead at 35-24, but Stephen Decatur battled back throughout the next two quarters. And with just 1:58 to go, the score stood at 50-47 following a basket by Livingston his sixth and seventh points of the quarter. After a turnover, Stephen Decatur got the ball back but rushed a 3-point attempt and then fouled Paris reserve Mike Huff. Huff missed both free throws, but teammate K.C. Gleckler came through with a clutch rebound to keep the ball for Paris.

Guard Rod Rodrick then proceeded to go 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch and added a layup, while decker who led all scorers with 20 points was l-of-2 from the line to close out the scoring. "Rod Rodrick played a crucial role for us by getting those late free throws," Fulk said. "Overall we shot the ball pretty well, and I think our defense did a good job for us." Shooting also wasn't a problem for Mount Zion, which hit a respectable 15 of 31 attempts from the floor versus Peoria. But getting enough shots certainly was. Facing a super-quick defense, Mount Zion had 20 turnovers, with seven coming in the first quarter as Peoria took a 17-9 lead.

From that point on Peoria just kept building its edge, shooting 53 "percent from the floor to lead 41-17 at the half and 61-34 after three quarters. "When we executed which was maybe 10-15 percent of the time we got some pretty nice shots," Steers said. "But they're just a fantastic team." In the first afternoon game, Derek Wheeler poured in 21 points and Bret Reedy added 18 points and 5 rebounds as Eisenhower downed Taylorville, 96-54. 2 Mattoon won the other contest, rolling past MacArthur 77-65 on 26 points by Willie High and 18 from Mark Aguilar. Karl Cole led MacArthur with 23 points.

ville fjORMAL (AP) Hickey Thompson scored two touchdowns and became the first Illinois prep rusher to crack the barrier in a season as Belleville Alth-off defeated Rock Island Alleman 21-13 in Friday night's Class 3A title game. It was defending champion Althoff's third state title since 1980, and it extended their winning streak to 26 games, Illinois' longest current prep string. Thompson rushed for 257 yards to give him 3,105 yards this season and credited his teammates for the achievement. "I think we have the best line in the state," said Thompson, a 5-11, 182-pound senior who hasn't made his college choice yet.
