Caucus Gets Law Degree Berkeley, Calif. (AP) She never attended classes and didn't take any finals, but Joanie Caucus Gary Trudeau's "Doonesbury" cartoon character was graduated Saturday from the University of California law school, complete with degree. Ms. Caucus thus became the first cartoon character to receive a degree from Boalt Hall. But her presence was felt as if she were actually there in cap and gown with her 285 classmates.

Her creator, 1975 Pulitzer Prize winner Trudeau, 29, made a rare public appearance to address Joanie's class. Trudeau said, "I wish we could tell you (Joanie) how proud we are of you I'm here today because I always believed in taking full responsibility for my creative decisions. Joanie Caucus' abiding need for support and guidance has brought me here today." In 1974, Trudeau had the 42-year-old Joanie leave her husband and three sons. She moved into a house with other Doonesbury characters and got a job at a day care center, then decided on a legal career. She applied to Boalt and was accepted.

Although Joanie never appeared, Trudeau accepted a certificate with her name on it. To observers, her presence was almost palpable.
