Decatur, Illinois Friday, July 1 0, 1992 LIFESTYLE BO 6 Western Wind concert's free 0 Country singer returns to native Illinois The a capella vocal ensemble Western Wind will perform in a free public concert Thursday in Kirkland Fine Arts Center at Mil-likin University. The 8 p.m. concert is part of a four-day meeting of the Illinois Choral Directors Association, which will be at Millikin from July 14 to 18. Western Wind is the artist-in-residence for the convention. A sextet formed in 1969, Western Wind's varied repertoire includes Renaissance motets, jazz, medieval carols, barbershop quartets, folk melodies and contemporary compositions.

The group was selected by Philip Glass to sing his score to the film "Koyaanisqatsi" and performs in "The Western Wind on the Air," a 26-part series on National Public Radio. 4y DAVID BURKE Staff Writer I Salad Bar Mon. thru Sat. 11 am 4 pm TWO SHOWS: Suzy Bogguss Once she graduated from Illinois State, Bogguss said she had to decide whether to be an artist or a musician. "It was a tough decision," she said.

"I didn't know anybody that made their living from being a professional musician, nobody that lived that way." Her third album, released in the fall, is "Aces." "On that particular album, I really leaned on a lot of songwriter friends," Bogguss said. "Beth Nielsen-Chapman (who wrote 'Save Yourself) is a good friend of mine, and she backs me up on some vocals. Nanci Griffith (who co-wrote the album's second hit, 'Outbound Plane') and I started out at the same time, and I saw her at a lot of the same places I was going." The first single from the album is a remake of "Someday Soon," first recorded by Judy Collins. "That was one of the first songs I played when I was starting out in 1978," Bogguss said. "That's a song that it felt cool to play with just the guitar, and I've always wanted to record it." Her latest single is called "Letting Go," about an 18-year-old daughter leaving her mother for the first time to go to college.

"I can really relate to it. It's pretty neat, a really nice story song," she said. "My husband (Doug Crider) wrote it, and I've been loving it for four years. This was the first time it seemed appropriate for me to record it." Today's category: Female country music singers ff-om Illinois. Name one.

Stumped? Well, in this case, Suzy Bogguss is in a class by herself. I "I guess I'm sort of a local girl," said Bogguss, no's performing Saturday night at Nashville North in Taylorville. "I've played a whole lot of oprys in (Tentral Illinois) when I was starting out." i She grew up in Aledo, a town of 3,300 south of Moline. was the pretty perfect size town to grow up in," sj)e said in a phone interview in Pocatello, Idaho, where she was opening for Alan Jackson. "I was raised in a home where I got to hear a lot of different kinds of music, and my next-door neighbor was in a ijjck 'n' roll band." Not being from Nashville, the Ozarks or the Appalachians was a disadvantage, Bogguss said.

don't have a Southern accent, so that was a strike against me," she said. i Bogguss graduated from Illinois State University vith a degree in art, specializing in metalworks. "I could actually settle down and manufacture jewelry if I wanted to," she said, adding that she has designed some earrings, manufactured in Rhode Island, that she sells at her concerts. "I'm talking with some people about getting it into spme retail stores," Bogguss said, i i Large Chopped Sirloin Dinner Salad Bar Mon. thru Thurs.

KING JR. DR. Decatur, IL judgment, were always broke. Children who need help should receive it, but an equal amount should be put aside for the others as their inheritance. Countless sibling relationships have been soured because parents decided not to leave anything to the child or children who "didn't need it." Also, the winds of fortune do change and while siblings A and may be very well off at the time the will is written, things could be vastly different down the road.

A great many readers are going to see themselves in your column today, Ann. Sign me Been Down That Road Myself Dear Been: You've made some valid points, but I keep questioning the wisdom of carrying coal to Newcastle. Readers, what do YOU think about this? Should parents give an equal amount to all children and grandchildren, irrespective of need? Ann Landers, columnist with Creators Syndicate, is published daily. Dear Ann Landers: I have a problem I can't share with anyone. You are the only person who cn help me.

I was in the Oak Brook Marshall Field's department store last yfcar, shopping for after-Christmas bargains. The store was very busy afcd the salespeople were directing castomers to various registers on different floors. I was on my way to one of these registers when I ran into some friends and we decided to have lunch. In the excitement of our meeting, I absent-mindedly left te store with $260 of merchandise, for which I had not piid. tl was scared to death to go back pay for the items for fear no one would believe me and I would gt arrested.

This has been on my mind ever since and I have been unable to think of a solution. I decided to send the $260 to you, Ann, ad ask that you find a way to get this money to Field's. I need to ciar my conscience. Thank you has ever shoplifted or inadvertently taken merchandise without paying for it, send a money order to the store for the full amount. It will make you feel good about yourself and the store will appreciate it.

Does need matter? Dear Ann Landers: I believe your answer to "Feeling Guilty in Texas" was less than your best. The mother asked if it was unfair to give more financial assistance to one child than another even if the other didn't need it. You said the wealthier child would understand. Ann, to help one child less than another is a disservice, not only to the well-off but to the disadvantaged. Just because children have made successes of their lives doesn't justify unequal treatment.

Too often continually helping the needy discourages them from helping themselves. My wife was a victim of such flawed reasoning. Because we had worked hard and were not in need of financial assistance, her father gave large sums of money to his other children who, due to laziness, gambling and poor so much. Anonymous in Oak Brook Dear Anonymous: When I received your letter and the $260 in cash, I phoned Linda Swanson, general manager of Marshall Field's Oak Brook store, told her the story and asked how to handle it. She was absolutely delighted with your honesty and suggested that I send the store a money order.

I've followed her instructions and am happy to be the instrument that cleared your conscience. But, please, dear Mystery Person, don't ever send cash in the mail again. You are lucky this $260 reached its destination. A money order is the way to go. P.S.
