www.herald-review.com TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2008 DECATUR, ILLINOIS SPORTS B5 His ips.com Cerro Gordo wins again Maroa-Forsyth's Carmen Hatton Herald ReviewStephen Haas dives to save a ball as Hey worth's Alex Roberts closes in. Team Soy Turkey Tournament WHEN: Today-Wednesday, Friday-Saturday WHERE: Stephen Decatur Middle School TICKETS: $5 MARQUEE PLAYERS: Antonio Drummond (Peoria Central), Kendall Kinnison (MacArthur), Karl Madison (Springfield Lanphier), Caleb Long (Mount Zion), Colby Long (Mount Zion), Jarod Oldham (Eisenhower), Jay Parker (Harvey Thornton), Reggie Smith (Harvey Thornton), Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook), Diamond Taylor (Bolingbrook), Lawrence Thomas (Springfield Southeast), Brock Von Nordeck (Eisenhower), Monty Wilson Jr. (MacArthur) DECATUR Continued from B1 Mount Zion coach Jay Driscoll said the tournament will uncover any problem areas a team is having in a hurry. "You're going to find out a lot about your team early. You don't have much choice," Driscoll said.

"It battle-tests you right away." Moore said, ideally, an early-season tournament allows a team to stretch out its rotation and see if there are any players on the bench ready to contribute. "That's the only thing I don't like about this tournament," Moore said. "Because of the level of competition, you have to leave your best players on the floor. It doesn't give everyone on the team a chance to show what they can do." MacArthur first-year coach Felipe Phillips said while the risk is high, so is the potential reward. "I like the challenge, and I want my players to like the challenge," Phillips said.

"It's a chance to start the season with a bang." Moore's Panthers (28-1 last year), led by the now-departed duo of Lewis Jackson and Jeremy Robinson, won the tourney title last year by beating Peoria Central 69-57 in the finals. Eisenhower, with junior guard Jarod Oldham and senior center Brock Von Nordeck as the catalysts this season, is the No. 2 seed. The top seed is Bolingbrook (18-9), which is powered by two Division I recruits in Wisconsin-bound Diamond Taylor a transfer from Westchester St. Joseph and Wisconsin Green Bay-bound Troy Snyder.

The third seed, Mount Zion (23-3), lost Mark Yelovich and Jordan Grinestaff, but returns the explosive Long twins, Caleb and Colby. Harvey Thornton (21-7) is the fourth seed. A traditional basketball power (17 state tournament appearances), the Wildcats are led by D-I recruits Reggie Smith and Jay Parker. Sixth-seeded MacArthur (5-21 will count on Monty Wilson Jr. and Kendall Kinnison offensively, and a full-court defense Phillips hopes will mean major improvement for the Generals this season.

staff reports CERRO GORDO Cerro Gordo moved within one of last year's win total, improving to 4-0 with a 50-40 win over previously unbeaten Argenta-Oreana. Kelsi Wright had 17 points to lead the Broncos, who outscored Argenta 19-10 in the fourth. "We played great defense in the fourth," Cerro Gordo coach Eric Helms said. "We pressured them without trying. We wanted to just lock down and play good solid defense." Jessica Damron led Argenta (2-1) with 11 points.

"They're physical, and the refs let the girls play. This was by far the most physical game we've played," Helms said. "But we were able to overcome it." Cerro Gordo SO, Argenta-Oreana 40 Argenta-Oreana (40) Stoerger 2 4-4 8, Camfield 3 0-0 6. Rich 3 0-0 6, Allen 1 2-3 4. Friend 1 0-2 2.
