Smith DECATUR George F. Smith III "Frank" 74 passed away at his home with his family and friends by his Bloomington, IL. Burl was born on Janu ARMY ary 16, 1920, the son of Ralph F. and Mary (Veech) Bauer, in Neoga, Illinois. On April 30, 1955, he married the love of his life, Velma M.

Hammitt. Together, they attended the Church of Christian Science. Burl was a former member of the Mattoon Lion's Club and the Lincoln Trails Toast-masters Club. He worked as a plant manager for Young Radiator Company for 34 years. Burl was a World War II Veteran and achieved the status of First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps for the United States Army.

He was very passionate about reading, especially poetry. Burl and Velma loved to travel, particularly to see the beauty of the mountains. Together they traveled to all 50 states, all Providences of Canada, and many countries Europe. He is survived by his sister, Hope (Vernon) Doll, of Lexington, TN, many nieces and nephews Dana (Herb) Eagan, of Bloomington, IL; Keith (Kathy) DoU, of Lexington, TN; Randy Hammitt of Colfax, IL; Bob (Shirley) Hammitt of Eugene, OR; Jay (Jeannie) Hammitt of Sandy, UT; Ray (Leslie) Hammitt of Meridian, ID; Dale Hammitt of Wasilla, AK; Jerry (Francine) Hammitt of Pleasant Hill, OR and close friends: Cynthia Bankson and "The Tuesday Morning Coffee Group." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Burl was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Bauer.

She was born September 13, 1933 in New Harmony, IN, the daughter of Glenn Wilsey and Edna Hap-pel Wilsey. She was a clerk at Norma Thompson the Robinson Wal-Mart. Norma married Richard O. Thompson on December 4, 1952 and he preceded her in death on February 12, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter-in-law, Gretchen Thompson.

She is survived by her son, Richard G. "Rick" Thompson, Macon; 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock with Pastor Jeff Monroney officiating. James Hofstetter ARMY Jim was born January 10, 1919 in Peoria, IL, the son of August and Verla Hofstetter. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WW. II and received two Bronze Stars for combat operations and bravery. He married Evelyn Fuller and after her death he married Lois Braughton Wiseman August 8, 1970.

Jim retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. He was in Planning and New Facilities at the Decatur, IL Plant. He also was Plant and tooling Manager in Melbourne, Australia in 1981. He was a Caterpillar Employee for forty-two years. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.

He enjoyed his friends and love of golf. He was a former member of South Side Country Club in Decatur, and of Northdale Golf and Country Club of Tampa, Florida where he moved after retirement. He also enjoyed being a member of Golden before moving to Florida. He leaves behind his wife Lois of Decatur, sons Ronald and wife Cheryl and Jim and wife Anna all of Lake Hava-su, Arizona, step-daughters Sheila Turner of Decatur and Pamela Knight and husband Jim of Tampa, Florida, stepson Terry Wiseman of Danville, Illinois, ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a great-greatgrandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife.

Frank was born August 6, 1937, in East Alton, IL the son of George F. and Gladys Mae (Highfill) Smith Jr. He graduated high school from Wood River High School and went on to graduate in 1959 from the University of Illinois with a BS in Chemical Engineering.

He had received scholarships for academics and had worked continuously to put himself through school. While at the of he joined the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, and had met his wife Judith Lynn White. They remained happily married for the remainder of Frank's life, a total of 51 years. Following his graduation he went to work at the Shell Oil Company in Wood River. Later, they moved to Menasha, WI where he worked at Appleton Coated Paper Company.

He then moved to Decatur to assist in taking care of both sets of parents in the East Alton and Champaign, IL. Once back in Decatur, Frank worked at A Staley Company in the starch division and was originator of the Ethanol Division at Staley's. He retired from Staley's but continued to work as a stock trader for over twenty five years. He loved to ski, bowl, and build, but he loved his family more than anything. He loved his bowling leagues, both singles and couples.

His other love was building. He helped design both houses and worked on bulldozers, nothing stopped him. If he didn't know how to do something, he would buy a book and build it. He also loved boating, skiing and saucer riding, and playing bridge. He was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed the competition of playing.

He is survived by his loving wife: Judith of Decatur; daughters: Susan May Smith of Mt. Zion and her children: Ben, Jennifer, Grace and Anna; and Sheryl Smith Ferry and her husband Tim of Kenosha, WI and their children: John, Ellen, Sam, Max and Jack. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews residing in Indiana. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and his only son George F. Smith IV who was called home to be with the Lord two years ago.

The family wishes to extend their special thanks to Pastor Randall Garrett and his wife Starla. Also, their sincere gratitude to Dr. Sobol, Dr. Valasco, DMH, Kindred Hospital, St. John's Hospital, Dr.
