DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW Decatur, Illinois, Sunday, August 27, 1978 Rebuilding defense Millikin football priority ment. Lettermen Brice Elliott, Tony Wilkins and William Jones return. Millikin is well-fixed at quarterback with senior Bob Lockart, junior Dale Patton and sophomores Jeff Ridner and Greg Corey. "Offensively we really liked what we were doing toward the end of last season, so we're probably going to run a little more option stuff than we have in the past," Chapman said. "Lockart is a mature quarterback and I don't think he'll have any trouble running the ball.

We have speed in the backfield, so I hope we can get to the outside more. Speed and the option are the easiest ways to get out there. "Since we don't have a fullback, as of the start of practice, we'll be using split backs and some We have to use more of a quick-hitting attack than power." Millikin will pass, of course, because Lockart can throw accurately and he has excellent receivers in lettermen Gordon Gregory, Kevin Coffman, Jeff Cooper and Eric Stevens. Returning lettermen in the offensive line are centers Tim Ruwe and Tom Morgan, guards Mark Placey and Sam Goe and tackles Jack Lundrof, John Petko and Eric Okerblad. College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin coaches obviously feel Millikin's defensive losses will hurt severely because they voted Millikin to finish fifth.

North Central, with four first place votes and 56 points, was picked to win the championship. Following in the balloting were Illinois Wesleyan 51, Augus-tana 49, Wheaton 48, Millikin 36, Elmhurst 31, Carthage 28, Carroll 17 and North Park 8. Last season Millikin and Wesleyan tied at 6-2, followed by North Central 5-3, Carthage, Augustana, Elmhurst and Wheaton 4-4, Carroll 3-5 and North Park 0-8. Kyle Review Sports Editor Replacing of last season's top 12 defensive players is the principal problem facing Millikin head coach Merle Chapman and his staff before the first football game at Eureka Sept. Chapman has a difficult act to follow since last year, his first as a head collegiate coach, he produced a co-championship with oldtime rival Illinois Wes-leyan. Millikin began practice last week with 110 players in uniform 63 returnees and 47 freshmen. The returnees included two junior college transfers running back Ed Givens of Danville and tackle Ken Moss of Champaign. Millikin is not exactly destitute in the matter of defensive replacements with 12 of the 30 returning lettermen having played last year on defense, either in the line or in the secondary.

Further, Chapman is pleased with the size of some freshmen and hoped they can qualify quickly for backup roles. The 8 who must be replaced are linebacker Chan Bell, linemen Scott Davis, Hank Denecke, John Heinzman and Kevin McGreevey and backs Craig Bundy, Don Lindstrom and Ed Trogdon. Lettermen returning on the defensive unit are ends Jerome Brown and Mark Ramsey, tackles Keith Carver, Mark Hosey and Joe Keilbasa, cornerbacks Randy Powell, Johnnie Rolle and Ed Stanley, linebacker Bob Hemmer and defensive backs Mark Edmonds, Neil Draper, Mike Harrison and R.J. Jones. "We won't make any changes in our defensive system unless we have to," Chapman said.

"If we can't find the right people to fit into our style, then we might have to make adjustments." One other obvious weakness is the absence of a fullback. Steve Oliver, one of the six lettermen with playing eligibility remaining who isn't returning, was the only legitimate fullback last year. Again, there is potential fullback talent among the freshmen. Chapman hopes someone is ready to fit into college ball quickly. One of the lettermen who did not report was running back Leonard Brinson but he was the only loss in this depart CHARLIE SAMMIS holds most Millikin kicking records.

He led in scoring last season with 38 points on 17 conversions and seven field goals. He was named on the college division all-state team selected by the Illinois Sports Information Directors Association. Holding is Kevin Coffman. BOB LOCKART returns as the Millikin University football quarterback. He's a senior from Shelbyville.

Last season Lockart completed 111 passes for 1,554 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 172.7 yards a game in passing. Colglazier likely will face Myron Kumler tonight. Kumler beat Belleville 4-1 and saved Barry Freeman's 6-4 victory over Kankakee. Kumler has been through this pressure before. He pitched Canton to the 1974 state championship and took Perfect all the way in 1976. This is Colglazier's first Illinois state tournament.

He was brought in from Phoenix, and given the task of making the A's champions. Now's the time. DECATUR 10. game. The afternoon session was rained out Saturday, forcing the 10 a.m. game. A Decatur vs. Perfect showdown was forecast all along.

It came true Saturday night when the A's smacked Golden 10-0. In other games, Pinckneyville eliminated Belleville 7-6 on a seventh inning homer by Kirk Prouart and Springfield Duffy's ousted Jacksonville 3-0 on Ducky Reed's four-hit pitching. Pinckneyville and Bloomington Beer Nuts were matched in the last Saturday game. Eleven teams began the double elimination tournament last Tuesday. The A's and Welding each have a 3-0 record.

Mike Hopkins swatted two home runs to power a 13-hit A's attack against John Stutzman. Doug Smith hit a two-run homer. Larry Moffett had four hits. Gary Scharf and Tom Cook each socked a two-run single in the six-run seventh inning. The A's were helped by five errors.
