"I just don't know exactly what yet." That was just minutes after Flora had completed a 71-47 rout over the Green Wave in the game between two teams that were 0-2 in the Effingham St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.

Actually, those lineup changes might have been evident when reserves scored Mattoon's first seven points of the game. Those came after Flora had built a 15-0 lead. "We've come out flat in three games now," Inman said. "We must be doing something wrong before the game." This was the Wave's worst start yet and most perplexing performance, as it was less competitive against Flora than against Breese Central and Charleston teams that had beaten the Wolves earlier this week. Wave sophomore Kristopher Heller broke up Flora's shutout with a basket and free three with 2:25 left in the first quarter.

That got him started on his way to a team-high 13 points while another player off Mattoon's bench Desmond McDonald added 12 in a bid for a starting spot. "The bench guys got a chance to play tonight," Inman said. "We saw some good things from the young guys. Some guys have earned a chance to start." They still could not top Flora's sophomore duo. Paul Knapp outscored Mattoon in the first half, as his 17 points led the Wolves to a 39-14 advantage.

Knapp finished 8-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Classmate Nick Painter added 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. "They put on a shooting clinic," Inman said in a game in which flora hit 15 of 23 first-half shots and finished shoot 52.8 percent from the field. "That's something we have to address." Anthony 2 (J. Jansen, Worman). Tempo change helps beat Braves By LEROY BRIDGES SlaW Writer DECATUR After an uneasy offensive performance Wednesday, MacArthur made a change to its starting lineup that worked Friday. Generals' coach Felipe Phillips turned to senior guard A'Jawon Gadison for a steady hand, and it helped them to a 58-38 win against Mount Zion in the Team Soy Capital Decatur Turkey Tournament. Gadison replaced sophomore Shevonte Joyner after MacArthur committed 25 turnovers and couldn't build any momentum offensively against Springfield Southeast on Wednesday.

Against Mount Zion, the Generals turned the ball over only 13 times, and five players scored eight points or more. "He did a good job of controlling the tempo, and our bigs got a chance to run the floor a bit more," Phillips said. "We got more energy from this game than we did the last game." While Gadison helped MacArthur settle into the game, Mount Zion played itself out of it. The Braves made only four field goals before halftime compared to 15 turnovers and that helped the Generals to a 29-11 lead at the break. "We just didn't do a good job of handling their pressure," Mount Zion coach Jay Driscoll said.

"We just missed some shots. They weren't bad shots, but we just didn't put the ball in the hole, and when you don't put the ball in the hole, it's just tough. "Ten points in a half, you just gotta do better offensively." Mount Zion started to make a run early in the second half with three straight possessions that earned points and cut its deficit to 14, but the turnovers resurfaced. Three straight turnovers all led to baskets, including an acrobatic and-one finish by MacArthur's Chad Jones, who pushed the Generals' lead to 21. "We have told him his role is going to be our energy off the bench because that's what he provides, and he said coach, 'I'll play that Phillips said about Jones, who's a junior.

"It doesn't mean he's gonna' get less minutes, we just know he can give us that spark off the bench." That's exactly what he did. Jones came off the bench for Phillips and led all scorers with 14 points. MacArthur (1-1) senior Bryce Taylor enjoys having someone who can step into a game and ease some of the burden for the starters. son for us, it's going to be a long season." With the tournament starting Wednesday, every team had Thursday off before playing again Friday. But Newbon didn't think his team had any reasons to deviate from the offensive game plan and then play so poor defensively.

"Just like I told them, 'You're a basketball player and you love to play basketball. It shouldn't matter what day it is, you gotta come out and Newbon said. Senior Jarod Oldham knows the transition to varsity basketball for some players is difficult, but the team has to start moving in the right direction. "We're going to have to get this stuff together soon if we want to have the season I'm expecting us to have," said Oldham, who led the team in points with 23. Just like Mount Zion, Eisenhower gets a chance to finish the tourney with a win when the two teams meet today.
