CHICAGO (UP) Adolph Kiefer, 16, the only person ever to swim 100 yards on his back in less than a minute, broke a couple of world's records today just to show his trainer he's "about ready" for big time competition. But Adolph's trainer. Big Stan Brauninger, was convinced already.

"He could've broken any of these backstroke records a year Brauninger said. "But I kept him under wraps until he quit growing so Kiefer, a tall, solid youngster with an infectious smile, rose from the pool and trotted toward Bruan-inger. He'd just slipped through 50 yards of water in 27 seconds, one and one-tenth seconds faster than the approved world mark His breath was even and he looked fresh enough for fast mile. He always looked that way, Brauninger said, even when he climbed from a crowded pool, during an interscholastie meet last week alter winning the 100-yard backstroke event In 59.8 Seconds something many experts had predicted never would be accomplished. Kiefer is entered in a Chicago meet Friday and an exhibition Saturday at Indianapolis, He smiled in embarrassment and said "maybe" when Brauninger told him he was in shape to take every record up to 1,000 yards.

"He's too modest," Brauninger said. "He doesn't know how fast he really is. Why, every time he steps into a pool he ties or betters a world record without half trying." In demonstration, Kiefer slipped into the tank and did a three-lap 7S yards in 4 seconds. The record is 45.8. Although Kiefer's forthcoming campaign is his first real bid for National swimming fame, he already has three marks up for consideration as world's records.

Clipping 46 seconds off the 500 yard backstroke mark of 6 minutes, 48 seconds, was his most notable achievement. He swam 400 meters in 5.18, which is 24 seconds better than the record and 27 seconds better than any American time. His best official time for the 150-yard event is 1:35.6, which is 2.4 better than the accepted record. his record 6f the early campaign to move up with Laffoon. Harold (Jug) McSpaden, Kansas City pro who was the sensation of the California tournaments and medal leader a month ago, has dropped to third place with an average of 72 even tor 22 rounds. He is the only winner of two major tournaments during the winter, with the San Pranclaco and Sacramento opens safely tucked away. Up among the names of the youngsters who are showing the way are two which have figured in many links battles through many a year Walter.
