The message board started out with greetings "to the boys from Jibby's Tavern in Sullivan, 111." Cheers. Then came the disaster.

The Phillies, mired in seventh place, played like world champs to win 64 and 10-4. The Cardinals fielded like Little Leaguers and hardly looked the part of a potential pennant winner as the boys from Jibby's squirmed and groaned. Only the Cubs fans in the group enjoyed the proceedings as they watched with one eye affixed to the Cubs' tally on the scoreboard. Their taunts became more stinging as the scoreboard showed a double victory over Houston. Bets as Sour As the Cards As the frustration increased inning by inning, one member of the excursion determined to relieve the anguish by fattening his wallet.

He lost steadily on bets ranging from $5 to $20 as the Phils kept scoring. That's the kind of day it was for Cardinals' fans. "Those blankety blank Cardinals I'm off 'em. I'm not going next year," was the disgruntled chorus. Chances are, though, that Jibby will have no trouble rcunding up a full crew for the 15th excursion.

The baseball was, after all, secondary. Jibby has the priceless knack of making friends so it's fun to go with Jibby, regardless of the score. Count me in for No. 15. Weary and rumpled, the 38 passengers straggled off the chartered bus Sunday night in Sullivan.

They were greeted by a sign tacked on the back door of Sports Headquarters: "The Cardinals are dead." The sign was suspected to be the handiwork of a gleeful Mayor Ellsworth Lehman, a Cubs man who had warned before the morning departure: "The Cards are going to lose two." So ended the 14th excursion to see "Our Cards" conducted by Jibby Florini, proprietor of Sports Headquarters, otherwise known as Jibby's Tavern. Cubs' Fans Laugh It Up The several Cardinals haters in the crowd, Cubs fans of course, laughed all the way back. Most of the others succeeded in drowning their sorrows in one way or another, including a turn at the poker table. The sign thus was a comic relief, the perfect touch. Artistically, the trip was a triumph.

The beer was cold. The fried chicken added at a stop in Nokomis was tasty. The seats in Busch Memorial Stadium were dandy behind home plate and in the shade. The weather was perfect-not too hot, not too cold. It seemed a fine day to see the Cardinals.

Leading the National League, the Cardinals had won seven straight. Moreover, in the first game, Jim Bunning, the Philadelphia pitcher who had not lasted more than seven innings previously against the Cardinals, was the starter.
