Teresa's fifth straight victory. Unser allowed only five hits and one earned run in notching his seventh victory of the year in nine decisions. He walked two and struck out 14 to give him 105 strikeouts in 59 innings this sea son. ners and they all got there at the same time." So Munn brought in two unexpected points. "I didn't figure that Howard Clifford could get a first in the broad jump," Don continued, 'even though I felt he would place well. Earl DeWerff and Benny Bennett came through just as ex pected. And Tommy Ashman with his first in the high jump." Then there was Spitzer who pos sibly ran the second fastest mile in Millikin history, although all it got him was second place. Gerry Stormer won in 4:21.1 and Shroyer figured Spitzer hit the finish line right at 4:24.

"It was a couple seconds faster; than he had done the mile before," Shroyer said, "and he did it on guts. In addition to the blister, he was sick just a couple of minutes before the race started." There was another gutty run, too, which didn't bring Millikin a point but it was appreciated by1 Shroyer. John Staedke had stom ach cramps during the first couple of laps of the two mile but he stuck it out and chased team mates John Polacek and Larry Barry to a fourth and fifth placei finish. So, with Spitzer's blister and De Werff tired from the low hurdles and 440 and Bader in the stands, there was nothing left for a relay team and the Blue missed the championship by 4 and a quar ter points. "Every time I looked up in the stands and saw Bader, I saw about 13 of our points sitting next to him," Shroyer said.

"I couldn't; help but wonder what we'd done with him. "The kids really put out. Maybe they were a little lucky to be up as far as they were but Shroyer didn't have to say that often luck comes to those who put out that extra little bit. And of course he didn't mention that the mutual respect af coach and team had considerable to do with it. Athletes put out for coaches who put out and in whom they have confidence.

I If the future Millikin coaches can command the respect of ath letes that Shroyer has been able to do, and transmit back his re spect of them, there won't be any worries about future Big Blue ath letics. ORANGE JUICE AND 7 CROWN, A JIGGER TO A TALL GLASS. One ol the nice things about Don Shroyer's departure from Millikin and Decatur in a couple of weeks will be the memory of his last year and the young men whom he coached.

The football group brought him an undefeated season and his first championship team. Last weekend his track squad! came within a few points of bringing him a conference championship. The football season went, for the most part, as expected. Shroy er anticipated an unbeaten season if his "children" came through as requested. "And if I don't mess things he would say.

But the track squad's perform ance was something else again and, in a way, was a more heart-wanning accomplishment than that performed by the gridders. "If all the boys I coach in the future put out as much as those kids did for me Saturday," Shroyer said, "I'll never have reason to complain." Don figured his team had only an outside chance to win the title, considering he had no pole vault-1 ers and no shot putters. When Jim Bader pulled a mus cle in his leg and was sidelined, it was a blow the squad couldn't expect to absorb. When distance runner (880 and mile) Ken Spitzer developed a blister on his foot Wednesday be- fore the meet, all hope appeared gone. "And during the meet there were a couple of disappoint ments," Shroyer said, "but they were far out-numbered by happy surprises and two or three real gutty performances." There was Dave Blue, Clinton freshman, with a second in the high hurdles.

"I didn't expect anything like that," Shroyer said. "The best time he had previously was 16 seconds flat, and that was on my watch and maybe I cheated a little. But he's a close second Saturday and the race went in 15.4 seconds." There were two points from Dick Munn in the 100-yard dash. At first he had been placed sixth, then moved up to fourth. "It was a tough race to Shroyer said.

The Commodores made five er rors (they now have committed naa lnree Passea Dalls' yielded six stolen bases and their lack of speed in the outfield en abled a couple fly balls to drop safely. Decatur hit on a par with Du buque, if not as timely or for as many bases, but misplays in the first inning gave the Packers four runs three unearned and the rest of the three-hour game was spent trying to catch up. Neal Austinson, with two dou bles and a single, and Dick Mc- Clain, with three singles, led the Decatur hitting.

Neither was as effective as the Packers' Ed Bays who socked a double nd three singles, good for four runs. The loss, Decatur's third in row, dropped the club six games behind Dubuque, now riding a six- game winning streak. The going may be a trifle easier tonight for the Commodores when last-place Fox-cities comes to Fans Field. The Foxes have won only two games. It will be "Book Night" with adults being admitted free upon the presentation of four books.

Children can get in for two used books. No magazines or comic books will be accepted. This unique admission is part of a cooperative venture between the ball club and the Macon County Mental Health Association to provide books for the "Book Fair" in Central Park Friday and Saturday. Either Jim Parsons or Tom Dal ton will pitch for the Commodores. tvoe aDDlied bv the Decatur Com modores will only get them sunk deeper in the Midwest League standings.

The Commodores "be kind to the opposition" operation continu ed at Fans Field last night, so for the second evening in a row the league-leading Dubuque Packers triumphed. This time it was 11-8 Perhaps infected by the Com modores avocation for giving away runs, the Packers gave Roberts Debut Successful Cleveland, May 22 (AP) Robin Roberts is back and the Baltimore Orioles are happy they have him. The 51-year-old right-hander who won 214 games for the Philadelphia Phillies, made, his Amer-can League debut against the Cleveland Indians Monday night. Using a variety of pitches in cluding a good fast ball Roberts set down six straight men in two innings, striking out two. He was ahead of every batter, and permitted only one, ball to be hit out of the infield.

The Indians won 10-7. "I was very pleased with the way he looked in the game," said Baltimore Manager Billy Hitch cock. "He'll get a starting assign ment either Wednesday or Thursday against Detroit." "I'm glad to be said Roberts, who was signed by Balti more Monday. "I've been keeping in shape. I'v been doing some throwing and I've been running." Roberts was on the 1962 roster of the New York Yankees, but never appeared in a game, before the world champions released him.

He contacted only two teams, the Orioles and Cincinnati Reds since being released. "I talked to people about going into business and thought about it," said the man who won 20 or more games for six seasons. I decided I still wanted to pitch. Self appraisals sometimes are wrong, but I hope this one is correct and I'm getting the opportunity I wanted. There is nothing wrong with my arm.

I know that. 'He can still throw hard," said Hitchcock. "He has come up with a pretty good changeup to go along with that curve and slider." Hitchcock said the Orioles need ed another starting pitcher to go with Chuck Estrada, Jack Fisher, Steve Barber and Milt PaDDas. Barber, still in the service, is only a weekend hurler. You need at least five starting pitchers," said Hitchcock.
