In a week when NBC was celebrating its strongest night of regular programming ever on Thursday night, CBS scrambled its Wednesday and Saturday night schedules, dropping two other programs temporarily and launching a new weekend movie. NBC, buoyed by the first two games of the World Series, won the A.C. Nielsen ratings last week by nearly three points. NBC's prime-time average was 19.6, followed by CBS at 16.7 and ABC at 14.6: It was apparently the first time NBC had ever-won the first four weeks of a season, and the first time for any network since ABC did it in 1977, said Gerald Jaffe, NBC's vice president for research projects. "The Cosby Show," top-rated again last week, had a 57 percent share of the audience on Thursday, its highest ever.

"Family Ties," in second place, also had a best-ever snare of 52. Each rating point represents homes equipped with television. THe share is the portion of sets in use during a time period. The rest of the top 10 included "Cheers," "Night Court" and the second game of the World Series on NBC, f'Murder, She Wrote" on CBS, the first game of the World Series and then three from CBS: "Dallas," "60 Minutes" and "Newhart." ABC's highest-rated shows were the seventh and sixth games of the American League championship series. In a week when series such as "Moonlighting" were pre-empted by baseball, ABC had only four shows in the top 30: three baseball games and "Monday Night Football." The network's "Our World," which is up against "The Cosby Show" on Thursday; was the lowest rated program of the week.

At CBS, "Better Days" was canceled and "Together We Stand" was temporarily dropped from Wednesday night. As of Nov. 5, "Mike Hammer" will move from Saturday nights to Wednesday, giving CBS an all-action evening of "Hammer," "Magnum P.I." and "The Equalizer." "Better Days," starring Raphael Sbarge as a kid uprooted from Beverly Hills to Brooklyn, showed no sign of building an audience, said CBS Research Director Michale Eisenberg. Its average rating was 11.6. "Twilight Zone," which had followed "Hammer" on Saturday nights, also was shelved and beginning Nov.

1, CBS will have a Saturday night movie. Wednesday has been a bright spot for CBS this year, with "Magnum" showing new life it ranked 22nd last week and is up seven percent in ratings after a losing three-year battle against "The Cosby Show" on Thursday nights. "I'm real pleased that there has been a Selleck said in an interview this week. "It vindicates the show in a way." oney' pockets million Flash" finished third, earning $4.3 million for 20th Century Fox. She edged out siren Kathleen Turner and Tri-Star's nostalgic "Peggy Sue Got Married," which finished fourth with $4.2 million.

Touchstone's two-star offering, "Tough Guys," with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as a couple of train robbers back on the bricks after serving prison time, was fifth with $2.3 million. The most serious offering of the bunch, stage play-turned-movie "Children of a Lesser God," earned $2 million for sixth place. In seventh place with $1.9 million was the year's big hit, Paramount's "Top Gun." Warner Bros' "Deadly Friend" was eighth, with $1.9 million while Columbia's "Stand By Me" was ninth with $1.4 million, followed by Blake Edwards' "That's Life." with $1.5 million. HOLLYWOOD (AP) "'Crocodile' Dundee" is still the nation's top-earning film, but on a per-theater basis, it was skinned by a pair of pool sharks who hustled "The Color of Money" over the weekend. The Aussie import snapped up $7.4 million, while "Money," Touchstone's poolroom drama starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise, racked up $6.35 million on its first weekend out.

But "Money" opened in just 635 theaters, compared with "Dundee's" 1,378 and pocketed a per-screen average of $10,012, nearly double the $5,395 bagged by the film from Down Under. In "Money," Newman returns to his role as Fast Eddie Felson from the 1961 film "The Hustler," with Cruise this time taking the role of the cocky newcomer. Martin Scorsese directed.
