Gebhart. Main 16S4. Phone M-2243 I re I 3 ea rs si k.sssl ib for Darker Rooms Cooler Colors, Typified by Greens and Blues, Make Small Rooms Seem Larger By MABEL DDM.AP James Millikin University One of the first points to decide in selecting a color color scheme is the choice of that is best suit- cd to the partic ular noust; have in mind. Vor example for any reason. the house is dark and needs an ef fect of light and sunshine there is nothing that, will give this as satisfactory as yellow.

If the house has a great' deal of light and sun- shine and needs a color which sug- rests coomess, then a blue, green or grey may be used. The direction which the house faces would help to determine the color chosen for the different rooms. It should be kept in mmd that the blues, greens and greys are the cool, receding colors and that they tend to make small rooms seem larger and large rooms larger. This is not true -of red, orange and yellow. These are the advancing colors, and give exactly the opposite effect making the rooms seem smaller and warmer.

All these colors may be handled successfully, beautiful harmonious color schemes may be carried out-in any of them. Choice in Colors In the use of any ono of these colors there is a wide range of choice. Kor example, yellow is a pure color but by mixing it' with red we may produce many different shades. If the amount of red is increased until we have equal amounts of red and yellow the color is orange. If there is more red than yellow then the red predominates.

In this case we have combined two colors that are warm, the result being extra warm. If, on the contrary we go the other way on the color circle mixing the yellow with blue, we will have very different results. The addition of blue to the yellow makes green which will become more decided until, if we add equal parts of yellow and blue, a pure green is secured. In this mixture we have combined a warm advancing color and a cool receding color. Avoid Pare Colors Pure colors are never attractive when use.d in large amounts and should be avoided in house furnishing except for giving accent.

For ex ample in a room which has blue as the predominant color a bright, orange bowl or vase, a bit of rrange colored flowers such as calendulas, or a picture which has bright yellow flowers, any of these will add a note of accent and will make the blue more interesting. Blue and orange are exactly opposite or complimentary to each other. Almost any color, scheme is Improved by the addition of black in small quantities. If, on the contrary, yellow Is predominant in the color scheme, spots of bright blue will be very attractive. Neutral colors are secured by com- bining with other colors.

For ex ample, blue, yellow and red are combined in equal quantities to make gray. It is easy to understand wby gray is a very harmonious color and why it combines so easily with other colors when it is understood that it has all these other colors In it. Thus, gray may be combined with blues, yellows; or with reds and in almost every case the result is pleasing.
