The medal is Britain's top military award. Jeffrey Selwyn of London's Allied Dunbar life insurance company, said the chances of twins reaching the age of 100 have been estimated at 50 million to one. Britain's oldest twins on record were Robert and Mary Bean, who celebrated their 100th birthdays Oct. 19, 1973. Robert died before the end of 1973.

"And the second statement (about being duped) is totally off the wall because the U.S. government never has rendered any kind of opinion as to who the perpetrator of the killing is," Callahan said. "We never indicated it was McGuire or any other individual." The Rwandan government issued an international arrest warrant for McGuire on July 27, the same day he left the country and seven months after the killing. McGuire said he's had several job offers in spite of the charges, and accepted one to teach a course in primates at the University of Oklahoma, where he is a doctoral candidate. McGuire, 35, of Hazlet, N.J., invited the Justice Department to question him at any time about the Dec. 27 slaying.

His lawyer, Michael Mayock, said he called the news conference to clear McGuire's name. Mayock said poachers or Rwandan officials could have wanted Fossey dead because of her outspoken efforts to shield the endangered gorillas from humans. He said she was known to have physically abused poachers, and the Rwanda government claimed she had shot at tourists. Fossey, 53, internationally known for the 18 years she studied the gorillas, was hacked to death with a machete at her cabin on the slopes of Mount Visoke, where she lived among the animals. McGuire, who was working as her research assistant at the time, had won grants to support his research on the effects of male parenting on undersized primates.
