Further Examination of Sewer Condition Ordered by Council Further examination of the condition of the Cantrell street sewer between South Jackson street and the Illinois Central railroad was ordered Friday as the city council debated what to do about rebuild- that link, approximately two and a half blocks long. That the two cave-ins following a heavy rain several weeks ago showed the badly weakened condi- tion of the sewer was further indicated by discovery yesterday that a manhole just east of Franklin street dropped into the sewer dur- 'ing the last two days.

New Cave-In A. L. McNabb, city commissioner there has been a new cave-in of! the sewer at this point. In considering rebuilding the short section of sewer at an cost of $22,000, the council has been troubled by belief that property adjoining the proposed "improvement would not "stand" any special assessment. If this is true, the city must meet the full expense by means of an emergency appropriation.

Commissioner McNabb said Fri-day if examination shows the sewer "to be in as bad condition as he fears, he will ask the council to "vote the emergency funds. Work Halted Cope Fisher, who have been excavating for repair of the two breaks west of Franklin street, halted work there and mo.ved to the point east of Franklin to determine the status of the sewer at this point. Commissioner McNabb's belief the sewer is in dangerous condi-'tion between Jackson and Frank- lin streets was heightened by examination of the sewer drain at a manhole in the alley between those two streets. It was found rthe sewer is half filled with dirt, and that water is running slowly, indicating that a free flow is im- east of that point. ASK RELEASE OF PRISONER Writ of Habeas Corpus Being Prepared in Forgery Case Release of Jerry Colligan, now held in the county jail on charges of forgery, is to be sought through a writ of habeas corpus, it was learned Friday.

The petition has been prepared, it was said, and is directed against Sheriff E. C. Wilson. Colligan, arrested several weeks ago as a member of a gang which duped Decatur merchants of $500 with fraudulent payroll checks, has refused to name any of his associates. Efforts to secure his release are based upon failure of authorities to arraign him for a preliminary hearing, it was said.

E. F. Wills, chief of police, said that a new warrant for Colligan's immediate re-arrest will be filed if his release is secured. Colligan has been identified as having passed checks in at least two Decatur stores and is thought to be guilty of at least 20 other cases. ENTERTAIN FRIENDS Mr.

M. DEEP CUT PRICESsS! Indefinite postponement of a call for bids on the proposed new city police radio system was intimated Friday, after radio equipment men informed officials that the new system as outlined would cost more than the $4,500 appropriated by the council. Corporation Counsel W. J. Carey said representatives of several radio equipment houses had quoted prices ranging from $6,000 to $8,000.

Since it has appropriated only the city can not legally draw upon any other fund to meet the difference, Mr. Carey said. Call For Two Way System The present specifications call a "two way" system in which occupants of squad cars could carry on conversation with the central station at police headquarters. However, a one way system, enabling police headquarters to radio orders but not providing for communication between the squad cars and the station, could be purchased for less than $4,000, it was estimated. The city council could, Mr.

Carey said, buy the one way sets now and later instal equipment to convert them into two way sets. Another plan suggested was raising of necessary funds for the two way system by means of benefit baseball game or dance. Mayor O. W. Smith seemed unwilling to invest much more than the amount already appropriated, and said the city might delay action indefinitely.

Corporation Counsel Carey said he is carrying on further negatia-tions with equipment firms before making any recommendation about what should be done. Five Are Injured By Taylorville Fireworks By Staff Correspondent TAYLORVILLE Four persons were recovering Friday from antitetanus shots and burns received from fireworks on the 4th of July. Another, Herman Bozarth, received a burned leg when a flashlight bomb was tossed at him on the street. None received serious hurts. The four injured are Bobby King, Roberta Smith, Hugo Giovagnoli, Eugene Hunter.

June being the month for brides, the clerk did a rushing business until June 19, issuing 13 marriage licenses. Since then he has not received a single inquiry about a license. Nine to Get Higb School Diplomas Nine seniors attending the summer session at Decatur high schools are candidates for graduation when the term ends July 27, Asa Sprunger, summer school director, announced Friday. Whether or not graduation exercises will be conducted has not been decided. Usually the graduates received their diplomas across the counter in the school office after their gmdes have indicated they are eligible for diplomas.

m. Friday in St. Mary's hospital. He suffered a stroke about a week ago. Mr.

Franpton was born in Decatur in 1868. He never married. He lived in Taylorville for a time, but most of his life was spent in Decatur, where he was engaged as a carpenter and contractor. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ida Ferris, Los and Mrs.

CLOVER FARM STORESft A new concrete and brick warehouse will be constructed on the northwest corner of Cerro Gordo and Union streets in the near future for the Gebhart Motor Supply Co. which is planning to take a 10 year lease on the new building. Construction will be started Monday by Clyde Foster of the Foster Chemical Co.

The new building will be the largest of its kind to be started in Decatur in several years. It will include one story and a basement and will cover almost the entire lot which is 62 by 150 feet.
