U.S. Embassy-officials who attended the funeral said this wish was being relayed to Fossey's mother and stepfather, Hazel and Richard Price of Atherton, Calif. Price plans to visit Rwanda to arrange for a permanent grave marker.

Near Fossey's grave were the burial sites of 13 gorillas. The closest grave, about 10 paces away, was that of Digit, killed by poachers MONT VISOKE, Rwanda (AP) -Slain American naturalist Dian Fossey, who for 18 years studied and befriended the rare mountain gorillas who live on this dormant volcano, was buried in a cemetery she built for gorillas killed by poachers. The burial in the gorilla cemetery near her remote research station on New Year's Eve was in accordance with the wish of Fossey, 53, who was hacked to death last week by an unidentified assailant. Embalmer Linda Gomez said doctors told her Spiegel died Tuesday morning at the La Semana Hotel on the French side of the island, which is divided into the Dutch territory of St. Maarten and French St.

Martin. She said Spiegel's wife, Betty, identified the body and it would be flown to New York. Bottoms said a funeral service was scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Frank B. Campbell Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Mrs. Carlson was born in Lin-dome. Sweden, daughter of Johannes and Augusta Lindstorm. She was a member of Tuscola United Methodist Church, Filjan-Mora Tuna Lodge. Chicago, and Vasa Order of America.

She married Arvid J. Carlson in 1926. He died in 1980. Surviving are her son, Roy A. of Seattle.

After the burial, about 50 friends and co-workers who had helped carry her body in a plain pine coffin up the slippery mountain trails placed flowers at a temporary grave marker. The marker was a stick bearing a color picture of Fossey with three young gorillas, taken from the April 1981 issue of National Geographic magazine. Fossey told a Rwandan journalist who interviewed her several months ago that she wanted her grave stone to bear a single word, "Nyiramacha- (Dec. 31. 1935) in his home.

Proficient in several languages, he began working as a story translator during a visit to Hollywood. Spiegel, a Jew, produced films for Universal in Europe until he fled Germany for Vienna in 1933, hours before Adolf Hitler was confirmed as chancellor. He was warned by his barber, a member of the SS. "These are the accidents of life that prevent you from becoming a lampshade." he said later. He moved on to Hollywood in 1939.

There, under the name S.P. Eagle, he produced pictures including "Tales of Manhattan" in 1942 and Orson Welles' "The Stranger" in 1946. With "On the Waterfront." he resumed using his real name in 1954. Spiegel was a prototype of the tough, cigar-chomping, hard-dealing producer that ruled Hollywood. His battles with artists are legendary.

He was a retired employee of A.E. Staley Mfg. was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Staley Fellowship Club and Grace United Methodist Church. He married Jeannette Strausbaugh in 1937.

Surviving are his wife; son, Alan L. of Phoenix. daughter, Mrs. Robert (Valerie) Spaulding of Bloomington; five grandchildren. Two brothers, one sister and one grandchild preceded him in death.
