funday, November 15, jjj 16 SUNDAY FEATURES DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD 'AND REVIEW The Mam Item in America Thanksgiving Day Dinner Is Bigger and Costlier Calkins on Planes Defense Takes Private Planes; They Lie Idle By SELBV CALKINS Special Correspondent Just who is doing what (and to whom!) in this business of taking twin-engine transports away from airlines, business firms and private owners for defense and lend-lease purposes? Nearly every day this writer drives past or flies over the Lockheed plant in Burbank, where there is a tremendous parking lot filled with airplanes. Most of them are Hudson bombers for Britain. But many of them are civilian planes awaiting something. Prominently displayed are two Lockheed Lodestars with the name "Yukon Southern" along their sides. This writer knows those ships, therefore the question above.

Yukon Southern Air Transport bought those airplanes for their tremendously important strategically as well as commercially service between Vancouver and Alaska. They usea the new ships only a little while when the Canadian government asked for them. In exchange Yukon Southern got two Lockheed 14s from Trans-Canada which trade cut Y-s passenger capacity by 20 per cent) and Trans-Canada dropped two schedules from Toronto to New York. 7 -vT j01 X'-i- JV4X l' r- 4a -JK" A 4 The two Lodestars are still sit-tins on a sandlot back of the Lockheed factory! Staff Work The rase of Yukon Southern's two badly-needed airplanes is just an example plucked out of dozens of similar cases which may be cited. These are not times for idle airplanes.

Every airline in the western hemisphere needs equipment: there isn't a one which does not have passenger demands crying for new airplanes and additional schedules. So if national defense or lend-lease purposes must take airplanes let's not take 'em until they can be used. Every airliner sitting idle on some factory parking lot is a 24-hours-a-day reproach. Keep 'em flying, somebody. Mystery Man Howard Hughes luxuriates in his aura of mystery like a Mexican peon loves the shade of a 'dobe wall.

He hasn't done anything that hundreds of others in aviation couldn't have done with the same virtually limitless financial resources. But whether Hughes is an authentic aeronautical genius or merely a very rich young man with an aeronautical hobby Has anyone ever asked him for his Boeing Stratoliner? Hughes has one. you know, a nice big four-engine Boeing 307. capable of tremendous range and load carrying capacity and it is his own personal property.
