25 (AP) "I am very grateful. It's a high honor and I'd like to thank the writers." Al Lopez made these comments today when told he had been voted the American League manager of the year for 1957 in the annual Associated Press poll. Relaxing after a torrid season in which his Chicago White Sox made an unexpected challenge for the flag, Lopez said "I really couldn't have done the job without the play 1 heyreally put out tor me. Lopez received 83 of the 180 votes cast bv members of the Base ball Writers' Assn. of America.

Paul Richards of Baltimore a named on 70 ballots. Casey Stengel of the pennant-winning New York Yankees, last year's manager or the year in the junior circuit, got 25 votes. And Pinky Higgins of the third-place Boston Red Sox- had the remaining two. Looking ahead to next season, Lopez said "we are trying to make a couple of trades. 25 (Staff) Newton, with Bill Ganley scoring two touchdowns, defeated Effingham, 20-7, tonight for its seventh straight win of the season. The Eagles are 4-0 in Eastern Illinois League play. Ganley ran 56 and 7 yards and Bill Eaton sprinted 25 yards for the Newton touchdowns. Mike Mulvey kicked two conversions. Larry Lane plunged over from one yard out for Effingham, and Loy' Davidson kicked the extra point.

Casey 13 Charleston 27 Charleston, Oct. 25 (Staff) Charleston remained undefeated tonight with a 27-13 Homecoming triumph over Casey. The Trojans now sport a E.I. record and a 6-01 overall mark. Fullback Marvin Brannon ac counted for three of the Trojans' touchdowns, running 25 yards in the second quarter, plunging 2 yards in the third quarter and going over from one foot out in the fourth period.

Dave Dooley cracked over from the one in the fourth quarter and Larry Bullock kicked three extra points. Casey's Pat Turtle ran 71 yards to the goal in the third quarter and Ron Rue took a 16-yard scoring pass with about 15 seconds re maining in the game. Morns Logue made one extra point. Charleston had a 15-6 advant age in first downs. The loss was Casey's second in a row after five straight wins.

Marshall 34 Palestine 13 Marshall, Oct. 25 (Staff) Scoring in every quarter, Marshall rolled to a 34-13 Eastern Illi nois League victory over Palestine tonight. Bob Bartram scored twice for Marshall on a pair of five yard plunges. John Bush scored on a one vard plunge and tossed a nine yard scoring pass to Dan Wilkin son. Tom Jones ran 19 yards for EIU Harriers Win Macomb, Oct.

25 (Staff) Eastern Illinois University won its final dual cross country meet of the season today, defeating West ern Illinois University, 26-29. Eastern has a 6-1 dual record. Western's Fred Sandoval and Dan Ryan tied for running 3.5' miles in 18:28 minutes. Battle Dance Favored San Bruno, Oct. 25 (AP) Battle Dance, winner of the biggest handicap of the pre-strike portion of the race meeting here, heads the field for Saturday's getaV way day Tanforan Handicap.

In Okaw Valley Tuscola Jars Sages' Title Bid, 13 to 6 Tuscola, Oct. 25 (Staff) Monricello's bid for at least a share of the Okaw Valley Conference football championship went awry tonight as 1956 champ Tuscola turned back the Sages, 13-6. Monticello thus completed its schedule with a 5-1 record. Tuscola is still in the running with a 3-1 mark. Willie Flanigan carried the game's opening kickoff 90 yards for a Tuscola touchdown and Gary Chaplin added the extra point.

Bill McFayden made it 13-0 in the second quarter with a four-yard run. Monticello counted in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard pass from Dick Dean to Dwayne Nelson. Tuscola outgained the Sages, 237-123. Both teams were weakened by the flu outbreak. Bement 13 Cerro Gordo 20 Cerro Gordo, Oct.

25 (Staff) Dave Babcock scored two touchdowns for Cerro Gordo tonight as the Broncos defeated Bement, 20-13, in an Okaw Valley conference game. Babcock scored on 8 and 9 yard runs after Don Rock had sprinted 64 yards for Cerro Gordo first toucndown. Bob Ferguson went over from the 2 for Bement in the second quarter and Bud Shankwiler scored on a 1 foot plunge in the following period Extra points were scored on passes from Buzz Nelson to Jim Huss and Philip Nelson for the Broncos and on a run by Shonkwiler for Bement. Arthur 0 Atwood 12 Atwood, Oct. 25 (Staff) Bill Austin scored two touchdowns for Atwood tonight as the Rajahs defeated Arthur, 12-0, in an Okaw Valley Conference battle.

Austin raced 54 yards for a touchdown in the second period and scored on a 59 yard sprint in the third quarter. Arthur never came close to scoring in the game. Atwood had an 11-3 first down advantage. Atwood now has a 3-2 Okaw record and Arthur is 0-5. Sullivan 20 Newman 19 Sullivan, Oct.

25 (Staff) Sullivan remained in contention for the Okaw Valley Conference title by edging Newman, 20-19, tonight. The victory gives Sullivan a 4-1 record. In the second quarter Wally Stutz scooted 46 vards for a touchdown to give Newman a brief lead. Mike Sullivan took the kick- off and raced 80 yards for a touch down and Roser Beai'ers convert ed for a 7-6 Sullivan halftime advantage. Stutz tallied twice in the tnird period on an 1 1 yard run and a three yard plunge to make it Sullivan opened up in the fi nal period on a 44 yard pass play from Bob Cochran to Beavers for a touchdown.

Mike Sullivan tied championship as a field of 13 was entered today for the fifth running Saturday of the Garden State Stakes. Although there was one late comer, a long shot named Fairfield, Jewel's Reward remained the favorite to win the world's richest horse race and clinch the 1957 juvenile title. Big 12 Maftoon Ties Maroons, 0-0 Champaign, Oct. 25 (Staff) The winning streak of the Cham paign Maroons was stopped at 20 tonight as they were held to a scoreless tie by Mattoon in a Big 12 conference came. Rick Duncan of Mattoon at tempted a 'field goal from the 12 yard line with only a few seconds remaining, but it was blocked. Champaign advanced as far as the Mattooon 20 on three occasions, but could get no closer. Both teams were hampered considerably by fumbles and penalties.

Champaign led in first downs, 8-7. Champaign's conference record is now 2-0-1, while Mattoon is 1-2-1. the other Marshall touchdown. Dale Svveitzer kicked three conversions and Bush passed to Wil kinson for the other. Palestine quarterback Bob Wal- drop threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Craig Wesner and, with only 40 seconds remaining in the pame, Waldrop ran a kickoff back 83 vards for the final touchdown, QT.

Peat Moss 25-lb. $1.69 100-Ib. $4.50 GUTTERING AND FITTINGS Lincoln Spills Normal, 73 to 7 Lincoln, Oct. 25 (Staff) Lincoln scored in the final three minutes of the game tonight to gain a 13-7 Homecoming victory over rsormal. Larry Engel passed 17 yards to Woody Jones for the decisive score.

A 33 yard pass play from Engel to John Kopp accounted for Lincoln's first quarter- touchdown. Dan Dutz converted. Norm Woellms olunped one vard for Normal's score in the second quarter. Dave Blunk kicked the extra point. North Egypt Fairfield Raps Carmi, Cinches Tie for Title Carmi, Oct.

25 (Staff) Undefeated Fairfield clinched at least a tie for the North Egypt Conference title tonight by beating Carmi, 34-19. The championship is the first since 1935 for the Mules who have a 6-0 North Egypt and a 7-0 overall record. Garry Curry scored four times for Fairfield on runs of 58 and 1 vards and on pass plays from Gene Blackburn covering 48 and 17 yards. Ronnie Heslin ran 12 yards for the final score. Bobby Cozart scored all of Car-1 mi's touchdowns on a pair Of five yard runs and a one yard plunge.

Flora 7 Bridgeport 39 Bridgeport, Oct. 25 (Staff) With Fritz Brian scoring three touchdowns and an extra point, Bridgeport defeated Flora, 39-7, tonight in a North Egypt Confer ence game. Brian' scored on runs' of 40 and 53 yards and on a 40 vard pass play from Gary Wagner. Wagner also threw scoring passes of 12 and 25 vards to Andv Gainer. Dean Hamilton plunged one yard for the other Bridgeport score.

Brian, Gainer and Hamilton scored extra points. A pass plav covering 66 yards from Larry Goldsby to Jim Suls- berger gave Flora its only touchdown. Stanley Davis ran the con version. Salem 33 Olney 6 Salem, Oct. 25 (Staff) Salem dumped Olney, 33-6, tonight in a North Egypt conference with Jerry Hughes scoring three touchdowns.

Hughes scored on a 70 yard punt return and on runs of II and 1 yards. Ronnie Dowdy and Jack Moore also added touch downs for Salem, both on plunges. Olney scored on a 13 yard pass from Mike Harris to Glen Williams. Hughes scored two extra points for Salem and Moore scored one for Olney. Salem is 5-1 in conference play while Olney is 1-3-1.

Shelby Wins, 27-13, Assured Of Title Share Shelbyville, Oct. 25 (Staff) Rhplhwille celebrated Home coming in championship fashion tonight as it whipped layiorvine, 27-13. and wrapped up at least a I share of the Mid-State Conference football title. Ace halfback Carv Anderson scored the first three Rams' touch downs, traveling 28 yards, catching a nass from Pat Holland on a play good for 49 yards and then plunging one yard.

Roger Miller tallied from the six in the fourth quarter. Miller added two extra points and Holland one. Taylorville's Gerald Parker ran nine yards on an end-around to score in the second quarter and Bob Castelli punched over from the one after the game had officially ended. A roughing the passer penalty gave Castelli the last chance. Castelli also made the extra point.

Shelby has a 5-0 conference rec ord and 6-0-1 overall mark. Tay- lorville is 4-1 in conference play. Pana 42 Kincaid 7 Pana, Oct. 25 (Staff) Butch Posteher scored three' touchdowns and Gary Akers two in leading the Pana Panthers to a 42-7 Homecoming victory tonight over Mid-State rival Kincaid. Posteher scored on runs of 3 and 63 yards and on an 85 yard pass play, the pass being thrown by Ronnie Crawford.

Akers tal lied on a 34 yard run and a 90 yard return of an intercepted pass. Dick Sphar also added a touchdown for Pana. Kincaid's only touchdown came on a 5 yard run by Tom Noreuil in the fourth quarter. 'Spahr kicked 5 extra points for Pana and Noreuil plunged one for Kincaid. Spahr has now kicked 12 consecutive extra points.

Hillsboro 14 Vandalia32 Vandalia, Oct: 25 (Staff) Vandalia overcame a halftime deficit with a 20 point outburst in the fourth quarter to down Hills boro, 32-14, in a Mid-State Con' ference Homecoming game tonight. The Vandals opened the scor ing as Brad Pry or skirtea 10 yards around end for a touchdown. Ter ry Leitshuh punched across from the four and Dave Gibson converted to give Hillsboro the lead at halftime. Vandalia moved ahead briefly in the third period on an 11 vard run by Fred Garland. Dick Hewitt scored on a 30 yard end run and Gibson again kicked the extra point.

Vandalia's splurge in the final period started on Pryor's second touchdown, a 12 yard run. Bob Metzger tallied on a 12 yard run and Danny Hampton smashed across from the three to complete the scoring. Keith Karr added two extra points. Albion Tops 19 0 Oblong, Oct. 25 (Staff) Albion defeated Oblong 19-0 here tonight.

Everett, Kimbrell and Hartin scored touchdowns for Albion. Soya Maroa Clinches At Least Tie For 4th Title Lovington, Oct. 25 (Staff) Maroa clinched at least a tie for its fourth straight Soya Conference football championship here to night, rolling over winless Loving- ton, 26-0. Richard Lazell and Dave How- land scored two touchdowns apiece for Maroa which is unbeaten in 3 straight conference games.

Lazell ran for 5 and 55 yards to score and Howland tallied on runs of 20 and 25 yards. Lazell and Dick Thomas each ran across an extra point. Moweaqua 7 llliopolis 35 Moweaqua, Oct. 25 (Staff) Bob Lamb led Illiopolis to a 35-7 Sova Conference victory over Moweaqua tonight, scoring four touchdowns. Lamb's touchdowns came on runs of 44, 49, 5, and 55 prds.

Bob Handlin also scored for the Pirates on a 1 yard plunge. Moweaqua 's lone touchdown wit scored on a 15 yard pass from Howard barver to Kay Luconic.
