Illinois, Wednesday, September 4, 1963. THE DECATUR REVIEW PAGE TWENTY-FIVE Stock Prices Hover Near Record High New York, Sept. 4 (AP) Steels gave a rising stock market strong leadership early this afternoon in heavy trading. The ticker tape ran late and prices moved ahead on balance, despite profit taking in many issues which have been strong recently. The main thought in Wall Street was whether the Dow Jones industrial average would top its record closing high of 734.91 made Dec.

13, 1961. Half-hour readings of this closewatched barometer showed the market approaching the record i in early dealings, then losing some of its gain, then going higher the afternoon. The performance of the steels was encouraging to market analysts who hope for higher prices. After an uncertain start, the" trend moved higher despite some raggedness in rails and the inability of utilities to make much progress. Industrials were carrying the burden of the advance.

The Dow Jones industrial average at noon was up 2.02 at 734.04. The Associated Press average of stocks at noon gained .3 at 280.3, with industrials up .9, rails off .2 and utilities up .1. U. S. Steel was up about a point and Jones Laughlin better than that.

Bethlehem and Republic Steel were fractional gainers. Chrysler was traded on big blocks and gained fractionally along with General Motors, Chrysler and American motors. Tung-Sol spurted about 5 points. Gains exceeding 2 points were made by Control Data and IBM. Prices were mixed on the American Stock Exchange.

Corporate bonds were mixed. U.S. government bonds were generally unchanged. Decatur Market Trends Butcher hog prices were steady today compared to Tuesday's quotations. Top hogs were $16.55.
