EIGHT THE DECATUR REVIEW Decatur, Illinois, Monday, July 8, 1957. CAP Cadets Leave Today For Chanute Two cadet members of the Decatur Civil Air Patrol squadron were scheduled to leave today to attend the annual 10-day CAP cadet encampment at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul. They are Cadet Sgt. Allen 17, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Short, of 57 Madison and Cadet Sgt. Mark Carter, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Artie Carter, of Blue Mound. At Chanute, the Decatur area cadets will be among 200 cadets from the Illinois Wing of the CAP taking training in basic Air Force subjects from Air Force instructors.

Subjects will include military drill, weather, navigation, mechanics, first aid and navigation. Rides in military aircraft also are included in the course. Any CAP cadet is eligible to attend the course, which is a "must" requirement for a CAP cadet proficiency certificate. The certificate entitles the successful cadet to enter the Air Force as an airman, third class, without taking basic training. Fifty cadets from the Decatur squadron have attended encamp ments over the last four years.

The squadron now has some 25 active cadets. Other summer test dates are: Champaign (U of I airport), August 14, September 11 Peoria (Greater Peoria), July 17, August 21, September 18 Danville (Vermillion County), July 24 Pontiac (Chief City), August 7 Mattoon (Coles County), August 28 Quincy (Municipal Baldwin), September 4 The exams also may be taken in Springfield. Five Decatur Men Buy Light Airplane Five Decatur men -two of them non-pilots-have combined to buy Luscombe 8A Silvaire light air- plane. They are William Hadley, a private pilot; Lon Kirby, a student pilot (a pilot not yet licensed to carry passengers); Bob Bennett; Merrill Hadley, and John Hoffman. Kirby will use the aircraft to get his private license, while Hoffman and Merrill Hadley will use it to learn to fly.

William Hadley is an excavator, his brother Merrill works at the Caterpillar Tractor Co. plant in Decatur, and Bennett owns a garage. Hoffman and Kirby are carpenter-contractors. The two-place, all-metal plane was purchased from Bob Lile, of Pana, assistant purchasing agent for the Mallory Corp. in Pana.

It will be based at Decatur Munici- pal Airport. Private Air Fields Up; Commercial Fields Down Two new private airports were certified by the Illinois Department of Aeronautics last month, while the certificates of one private and one commercial field were cancelled. New private airport certificates were issued to Clinton Thomas, of Oakford, in Menard County, and Jack W. Watson, of DeKalb, in DeKalb County. The commercial cancellation was the Aviation Boosters Club Kewanee.

UN Air Agency Forecasts Wider Use of Taxi Copters United Nations, N.Y., mne 24 (AP) A U.N. specialized agency says the trend in air travel is toward jet plane helicopter combinations working together somewhat like ships and boat trains. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) also said in its annual report that the world's airlines had ordered 343 jet planes by the end of last year.

In the future, the report said, "some of the larger helicopters might be used, much as boat trains are now used for surface transport, in taking passengers from the large airports at which the jets will land to various well-separated destinations." Helicopter air taxis already are in use in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles on a regular route basis.
