Any hopes to perform on Broadway. In the meantime, she's receiving an international education.

"It's a real learning experience in Paris. Everything is complicated. Nothing is easy. At the library you need a seat assigned, you have to request books from someone and then you get them 20 minutes later." Fortunately, six years of studying French enable Amy to communicate. The natives still know she's an American.

"I walk by and they'll speak English to me. All the Americans wear Reeboks on their feet" Americans in Paris got together in January to watch the Super Bowl at a tavern. Amy returned to Paris Friday. This summer, she'll work for Club Med. She'll teach aerobics and dance in a yet-to-be-determined European country.

Next fall, she returns to Butler for her senior year. When she gets back, -Amy will bring a palate with a heightened appreciation for wine and liver. Frog legs, however, will be replaced by pizza. "I play because I have a good time and I like to win." Her mixed team partner is Prudential insurance agent Jim Cairns. "I feel Decatur is the hub of shuffleboard," Cairns said. "I could seldom find bank boards anywhere else." The game is played on a 12-foot-long board with cushioned side rails. Pucks made of metal and plastic are ricocheted off the rails. Points are tallied on the other end when the puck comes to a rest Part of the challenge is trying to slam opponents' pucks off the board, thus costing them points.

The league began six years ago. It has expanded to eight women's teams and 20 mixed teams. The mixed teams are split into two divisions with the winners meeting in a mini World Series. Russ Craig, one of six members of the shuf fleboard-loving Craig family, started the league. He and By STEVE METSCH Herald Review Lifestyle Writer Amy Wicker traveled halfway 'around the world to see her Hollywood debut Amy, 20, has studied dance in Paris since September.

During a recent visit to her Decatur home, she discovered the movie "Hoo-siers" had dribbled out of town. But while registering for fall classes last week at Butler University in Indianapolis, Amy finally saw herself on the screen. The former Stephen Decatur High School cheerleader had rah-rahed her way to a bit part in the movie about Indiana prep basketball. "You don't see me for long," Amy said. "I'd say about five or 10 seconds.

I'm jumping up and down. When our team loses, I hug other cheerleaders." Amy cheered the Terhune Tigers, who tumbled to a team coached by star Gene Hackman. "He's a vegetarian," Amy said of Hackman. "We didn't see much of him. He ate in his trailer." Amy learned about the Hollywood lifestyle during two days of filming in Indiana in November 1985.

Shell stick with dancing. "We got there at 7 in the morning and left at 8 at night A lot of time was spent sitting down waiting. It's funny. The ad said we'd be paid $400 to $600. 1 said 'Why But all I got was $5 an hour and about $80 total.

But it was in cash, which was nice." Amy and four Delta Gamma sorority sisters heard about auditions, had time to kill and tried out. Casting people liked her young look, red hair and cheer-leading background. All five were selected. "It was different. We had to cheer without technique just jump up and down and say a yell like 'What time is it? It's time to At Stephen Decatur, we used more gymnastics, not the real cutesy stuff," she said.

Despite "cutesy" and low wages, there were highlights. Amy ate breakfast with Dennis Hopper, whose portrayal of an alcoholic assistant coach earned an Oscar nomination. "We talked about 'Apocalypse Now' and other things he's done. I had a doughnut and he had an omelet He came out each day and talked with the people involved with filming. I was impressed." The movie hasn't played Paris yet, but Amy promises to take friends to see it when it does.

She thinks hearing Gene Hackman speak French would be strange. In any language. Amy can proudly point out her bit part. THIS AMERICAN in Paris longs for pizza and peanut butter. "Those are the foods I miss most," Amy Wicker said.

"There is a pizza place I go to in Paris, but two pieces of pizza and a small salad cost $11." Easy To Clean! At various times, I've tumbled for Ralph Sutton, Eddie Higgins, Dick Hyman, Teddy Wilson, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Fats Waller, Dave McKenna, John Ulrich, Warren Parrish, Pete Clute. Right now I've tumbled for MarkHaldorson. I beard Mark Haldorson for the first time last month at the old-time piano playing concert at the Tack Room in Dliopolis. The first time around, he ended the concert with a patriotic medley, including "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "America." A socko finale. Haldorson's other show-stopper was an Elton John medley.

It's not difficult to tell why he won the world championship old-time piano playing contest in Monticello three times in succession, 1981-83. Of course, I'm partial to music of the 1920s and 1930s, so everything Haldorson played sounded sensational. I'd like to see him in a jazz band format That's a hint for Jim Parker and Maggie Parker, operators of the Tack Room. Speaking of the Parkers, they have booked Banu Gibson and her New Orleans Hot Jazz Orchestra for June 14. The Parkers hoped to have Lew Green and the Salty Dogs for that date.

Banu is a hot item nationwide, hotter than the Salty Dogs. Linda won 89 percent of her games this past season. She's one of the better shuffleboard players in Decatur.

And one of the best at the Lone Oak Tavern, which boasts a shuffleboard dynasty. This brand of shuffleboard is not played outdoors while sipping mint juleps in the hot sun. Decatur's version is plaved in smokey bars with glasses of beer and bags of pretzels. Few play better than the folks at Lone Oak. The Lone Oak mixed team won four city championships in six years.

The women have won three straight championships. Linda, 23, has been playing seriously for five years. She, one sister and two brothers grew up with a shuffleboard in the basement. Parents Max and Cynthia Craig own Lone Oak and also play. "DAD USED TO hold me up Decatur Shuffleboard MIXED LEAGUE American laagu El Rado Inn Sundown I Lone Oak Escape Rambo's Night Owl.

"We pride ourselves on the fact that people who play here drink here. Cairns said. "Some other taverns will recruit We don't." Players like Pete Nicholls, with 41 years of shuffleboard experience, teach new players the game's tricky details. "I learned from the best," said Linda Craig as she slid another puck down the board covered with slippery wax. "This is my sport I tried to play the long boards (21 feet) in Texas, but that messed me up.

So I came back here." For the record, she beat this re- Eorter, who discovered shuf fle-oard isn't an easy sport. The score was 15-8. COUNTRY 1. "Don't Go to Strangers" T. Graham Brown (Capitol) 2.
