Crang-Bennett unit of the American Legion auxiliary, today announced the appointment of district captains to direct the distribution of memorial poppies here May 28. Mrs.

Ralph Peel will handle the sale in the northwest section, Mrs. Elbert Jenkins, northeast. Mrs. Clyde Helm, southwest, aaa Mrs. G.

F. Chamberlain, southeast These captains will- organize the door to door sales by children. Businessmen, Railroad News 3 1. C. Rail Crossings Get Flash Signals Traffic over the, several tracks in the Illinois Central railroad cross ings at East Eldorado.

North and William streets need no longer look lor the old familiar crossing watchman with his whistle and stop sign after today. At 7 a. m. Wednesday, the com-, pany will put flasher light signals in service at each of these three crossings. They are controlled manually by -an operator in a lower located at North street, 'the middle of the three streets.

The service will be for 24 hours each day, requiring three tricks of watchmen. However it will also eliminate three watchmen whs have guarded each of these three crossings for two shifts or IS hours a day. Taking the tower jobs will be Nelson Corrington, first trick; John second. and Henry Luckenbill, third. Flasher lights were also put in service at the Main street crossing in Maroa Monday, displacing the veteran crossing Marrow.

FREIGHT TRAFFIC on the Decatur division of the Wabash in the first two weeks of May was down 24.5 per' cent from the corresponding period a year ago, and about five per cent under the business in. the first two weeks of April. In the two weeks, the division handled 40.S52 loads and 24,695 empties in 850 trains. This is a decline of 13,315 loads, 300 empties and 235 trains under the figures for the first two weeks of May 1948. In another way of comparing, the daily average loads on the division In these last two weeks dropped to 2,925 and this is the lowest daily average made in any previous month since back in December 1941.

The peak of average daily loads for any month was reached in March 1945 with 4,815 or almost 1,900 more loads per day than at present THE, WABASH will handle two special passenger trains out of Lafayette, Ind' for St. Louis at 2:30 and 3 a. m. Thursday with the Metropolitan Opera company and its 'baggage. The first train will have 11 cars including the baggage while the second will be a 10-car Pullman train.

They will be due in St Louis at 8:30 and 9:15 a. m. The company appears in St. Louis for three days this week end. The Illinois Central Service club of Decatur will have a regular monthly meeting and social event in the freight house Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock.

At this time "plans will be made for" the closing social party of the present and also for the annual September chicken ry. BEN SINGLETON, Wabash night chief train dispatcher on the third trick, returned to work Monday night after having been off duty for several months because of illness. Engineer Conrady of the Wabash west end service has bid in a vacancy for engineer on the Hannibal 8 a. m. yard engine and this throws a turn in pool freight open for bids from engineers up to Sunday, May 22.
