Miranda Ryan Meece, foreground left, Matt Oliger, foreground right, along with Ben Davis, left, Joe Melvin and Paul Walden are earning some seasoning this season as Monticello tries to improve on a trying 2003 season. So, far, the Sages are doing just that. Sages slowly rediscover success MMI 11.11 HI4my.ll' I yH II MM M.M MJIM pll 7 Notes Effingham shows grit vs. Mattoon By TROY HAYES Staff Writer Chris Fleener learned something about his Effingham baseball team Monday it's resilient. Effingham (9-1) suffered its first loss of the season, booting three plays in a 7-6 loss to Newton on Saturday.

The Flaming Hearts bounced back with a 7-6 win at Mattoon on Monday. It's the first time that Fleener has beaten the Green Wave in Mattoon in his five years at Effingham. Fleener's team beat Mattoon in a 2001 regional game. "I didn't think it was that big of a deal," Fleener said. "It's not a conference game.

It does possibly improve our seeding, but I thought it was just another win." The players didn't though, and neither did their classmates. "They had a bounce in their step after that game," Fleener said. "And kids at school are patting them on the back and wondering when the next game is." The next game is at Paris on Saturday at 11 a.m. Wakeman to play D-ll ball Mount Zion outside hitter Amanda Wakeman signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play volleyball for the University of Charleston in West Virginia. The Golden Eagles are a NCAA Division II school that plays in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference "I'm really looking forward to it," Wakeman said.

"The campus is really nice and when I visited, I just felt comfortable there." Wakeman, who earned a partial scholarship for her academics, said the Golden Eagles finished last season 24-16 but graduated eight seniors, so playing time should be plentiful. "I think the chance to play right away will be there," Wakeman said. "It's just a great opportunity for me." Wakeman was second-team All-Apollo and second-team All-Macon County this year and currently has a 3.9 grade-point average and is 11th in a class of 179 at Mount Zion. TTown keeps stingy net Teutopolis is used to success on the tennis courts, but this year's team and the team's to come may become something special. Greg Brumleve's squad this year is 6-0 and has shut everyone out except Salem.

The Wooden Shoes scored a 5-4 victory over the Wildcats. Brumleve, though, is reserved about the shutouts. "They were against good programs that are rebuilding," Brumleve said. "The Salem win was a good one, but we're trying to not get too excited." Teutopolis is led by seniors Aroyn Borries, Brian Thoele, Tyler Ziegler, Ryne Donsbach and sophomore Ryan Vogt. Brumleve thinks his team will know exactly where they stand in the next couple of weeks.

They travel to Champaign in consecutive weekends for tournaments. "We want the competition. We need the competition," Brumleve said. "It's the only way you get better." Pirates coach cites smarts Cumberland softball coach Anne Catey cited her team's No. 15 ranking in the nation academically by the National Fastpitch Coaching Association as a major component in the team's torrid start.

Last week, the Pirates beat Casey-Westfield for the first time in the history of the program. "When you've got kids out there who are thinkers, you can bring it up a level," she said. Troy Hayes can be reached at or 42J-6970. two within the first two or three innings," Oliger said. "And our outfielders are running down every ball hit toward them." Monticello hasn't won a baseball regional since 1993 the same year the school board did away with the junior high baseball program.

Schwarzentraub is hopeful the start of a new junior league program will rekindle the baseball spirit in Monticello. For the moment, he'll settle for the improvement his team has shown. "They can sense we're a better ball club. Even though we lost to Rantoul (by a run), the year before, they beat us by the 10-run rule," Schwarzentraub said. "Hopefully they can keep that progress going and be competitive in more ball games this year." Schwarzentraub admits the team has a ways to go.

But the pitching and defense has improved. As soon as the offense warms up, the Sages might not be the pushover they essentially were a year ago. "We're only hitting .264 as a team. We only had four hits against (Paxton-Buck-ley-Loda), but one was a two-run homer," Schwarzentraub said. "That was a nice win for us.

The bats still have to come around. It shows in players that don't play summer baseball. You just don't step in and do it, and hopefully the batting average will get better." And when it comes right down to it, the team, from top to bottom, expects to win this year. "I think that the seniors we have this year are putting in the sense of leadership we didn't have last year and making everyone play better," Oliger said. "Jack Dawson and Ryan Meece, as seniors, they feel it's their job to pull the team through, and that's what they're doing." Todd Engle can be reached at tengle or 421-7970.

Year of tough lessons helps turn around young team By TODD ENGLE Staff Writer Sure, the baseball season is barely a month old. And a relatively young Monti-cello team was 4-3 heading into a pivotal four-game stretch this week, wrapping up with Tuscola today and St. Teresa on Friday. By Saturday, the Sages had the opportunity to earn eight wins, including two in the Okaw Valley Conference. That may not sound like much, especially in mid-April.

But it would show just how much Monticello has turned things around, considering it managed just five wins last season. The key to the turnaround isn't anything spectacular. Most of it has to do with nothing more than basic, fundamental baseball. "We're throwing a lot more strikes than what we did. Our strike-to-ball ratio is incredible," senior pitcher Ryan Meece said.

"Our fielding is more improved. We used to have six or so errors a game. This year, I don't think we've had a max of three or four errors. That makes the game go by so much faster. The fielders know situations and are capitalizing on that." Experience has something to do with it as well.

Last year, coach Les Schwarzen-traub was forced to trot out a pair of freshman pitchers. Matt Oliger and Andrew Turner tied for the team lead with two wins apiece. Meece was called upon to be the ace last year, drawing starts against most of Mon-ticello's toughest opponents. His record and ERA reflected some of the poundings Meece was called upon to be the ace Monticello staff last season. started the week with a 1-0 record ERA in 10 innings pitched.
