Rap Brown, overflowed a church for the slain Black Panther cofounder's funeral Monday. "Huey Elaine Newton was a chairwoman hero," said Brown, the Black Panther Party from 1974-77. "I think that's how we have to leave here today thinking of him as a hero. A hero who sparked hope into runaway slaves." "I really believed Huey was inBrown told the mourners, many of whom wiped away tears. "I really believed he would live to fight another day.

And as I look out and see you gathered today, I believe he is invincible." Newton, 47, was killed early Aug. 22 in the poor West Oakland neighborhood where he began organizing blacks more than 20 years ago. Police said Newton died in a dispute over crack cocaine. Tyrone Robinson, 25, a reputed prison gang member who police say has admitted killing Newton, was being held without bail awaiting his arraignment. The 1,200 seats in the Allen Temple Baptist Church were full, while hundreds who couldn't squeeze in milled about outside during the three-hour funeral.

On Sunday, about 6,000 people filed through an Oakland funeral home to view Newton's body, which was buried privately later Monday. The mourners whose dress ranged from somber street clothes to dashikis and black berets included members of Newton's family, friends, and fellow radicals from the 1960s and '70s, when the Black Panthers espoused the cause of black liberation and "the power of the gun" against white authority. Among those on hand were Bobby Seale, 52, the Panthers' other founder, and H. Rap Brown, leader of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. "We're here to celebrate his life, 1 not to discuss his Brown, who now works for a Los Angeles lawyer, said shortly before the funeral.

"We don't need counter fratricide. He'll be remembered as a hero." EFFINGHAM Thomas Jefferson Potter, 64, of Effingham died 9:40 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 27, 1989) in St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
