EIGHT THE DECATUR REVIEW Wednesday, March 19, 1947. Fayette Crash Fatal to Two Vandalia, March 19 (Staff). Clarence E. Williams, Indianapolis, was killed instantly, and Staff Sgt. Robert F.

Burns, 23, Newcastle, died a few hours after a head-on collision of their car with a truck on route 40 one mile east of Mulberry Grove. A third passenger in the car, Phillip Gibson, 35, Indianapolis, was critically injured and was still unconscious this morning in Mark Greer hospital. Burns was driving the car which collided with a truck driven by Robert Kennedy of Muncie, Ind. Kennedy, who was uninjured, said that another truck, going in the same direction, had passed him when the passenger car approached partly on his side of the road. He said he drove his truck off the road attempting to, avoid the collision.

He was taken to a Belleville funeral home and will be buried in the National cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. The body of Williams will be returned to Indianapolis. Main St. Youth Claims He Murdered Black Dahlia St. Louis, March 19 (AP) St. Louis police reported a slender 22-year-old youth signed a statement admitting the "Black slaying but officers in Los Angeles, where the nude bisected body of Elizabeth Short was found, pointed today to discrepancies in the story.

The 22-year-old Miss Short was known as the "Black Dahlia" because of her black hair and clothing. Chief of Detectives Leonard Muridentified the youth as Melvin Robert Bailey and quoted him as saying he "got mad" at Miss Short because she refused to go east with him and "took my knife out and used it on her." The mutilated body of the girl was discovered in a vacant lot in Los Angeles last Jan. 15. The youth brought up the "Black Dahlia" case during a routine questioning concerning stolen automobiles yesterday. He was arrested last Feb.

12 on a highway near St. Louis with a male companion. A of crank notes and false "confessions" followed the finding of Miss Short's body. Los Angeles police said they would await receipt of Bailey's fingerprints and the statement before determining their next action. Mrs.

Henrietta Fischer, 81, Here 56 Years, Dies Mrs. Henrietta Fischer, Decatur resident since 1891, died in her home at 1430 East Condit street at 6 p. m. yesterday. She was 81 years old.

Mrs. Fischer was born June 11, 1865. in Dortmund, Westphalia, Germany, and came to Decatur in 1891. She was married to Fred Fischer while in her native country. She is a charter member of the St.

John's Lutheran church, and a member of the ladies' aid society of the church. She leaves two sons, August and Fred both of Decatur, and two daughters, Mrs. Martha Grefe, Springfield, and Mrs. Bertha Grefe of Enid, Okla. She also leaves six grandchildren, Mrs.

Henrietta Haines, Decatur; Robert Fischer, Decatur; Henry Grefe, Omaha, Lois Grefe, Enid, Okla. and Betty and Eunice Grefe of Springfield. She leaves five great-grandchildren. The body has been taken to the Moran's funeral home. Brief services will be held at 1:30 p.

m. Friday at the funeral home chapel and services at the St. John's Lutheran church will follow at 2 p. m. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today. Ryman V. F. W.

Elects World War II Slate Marion L. Gaddis, a veteran of World War II, was elected commander of Herbert D. Ryman post No. 99, Veterans of Foreign Wars, night, succeeding Thomas Cloyd, who was a veteran of the first World War. Other officers elected are: John Curry, senior vice commander.

Lee Kimmons, junior vice commander. John Wells, quartermaster. John Regan, post advocate. Chester Rice, post chaplain. Dr.

P. A. Steele, post surgeon. Earl J. Curry, trustee for three years.

All officers elected are veterans of 'World War II except Dr. Steele, a veteran of the first World War. East St. Louis Journal Is Sued for $600,000 Suit for $600,000 has in the circuit court at Belleville against the East Louis Journal by Leo J. Dougherty, a former East St.

Louis city commissioner. Dougherty is supporting the incumbent city hall slate of candidates in the forthcoming East St. Louis city election. The suit, in two counts, is based on a statement by a defeated primary candidate for commissioner that he was offered $5,000 and a better job to swing his support for an independent ticket to the incumbent city hall candidates. The statement later was retracted.

KOCH ESTATE Estate of the late Arthur F. Koch, who died in Decatur March 3, is valued at $5,500, according to a petition for probate of his will filed in county court yesterday. Two Registered Jerseys Sold for $400 Each Two registered jersey cows sold for $400 apiece and another brought $385 at the dairy sale of Clark Plankenhorn who lives north of Decatur near the Hickory Point school.

The sale was held yesterday morning. Mr. Plankenhorn is a member of the Macon County Dairy Herd Improvement association and the cows were sold largely on the basis of their excellent records for milk and butterfat production. top cows were milkers and the herd average was 328 pounds of butterfat since the cows were put on test last June. The average price of purebred and grade cows sold was around $275, it was reported.

The dairymen said he still has 14 top quality young jerseys and is planning to keep his place in the herd improvement association. Macon Crash Deaths To Be Probed Tonight Inquests into the cause of the deaths. of Mrs. Elizabeth Plummer, 71, and Miss Bertha Smull, 73, will be held in the Glenn funeral home in Macon at 7:30 p. m.

today, it was said last by Coroner Harold Brintlinger. The two sisters were fatally injured on Feb. 26 when their car was struck by an Illinois Central freight train and carried two blocks at the south side of Macon. Mrs. Flora Reichert, 71, escaped with bruises.

Mrs. Minnie Highly, 75, remains under treatment in St. Mary's hospital for injuries received in the accident. She remembers nothing of the accident, Coroner Brintlinger said. County Judges to Tour Two State Institutions County Judge Gus T.

Greanias will accompany Judges Robert Sanders and Daniel H. Dailey, of Shelby and Christian counties, respectively, in a tour of two state institutions today and tomorrow, he said yesterday. The three judges will visit the Geneva school for girls and the St. Charles school for boys during their two-day trip, as part of their regular program of handling juvenile delinquency work in the county courts. Senate Votes Dewitt Shift The Illinois state Senate yesterday approved the transfer of Dewitt county from the 17th to the 22d district in the proposed new map of Illinois congressional districts. Through the change.

Dewitt county will remain with Macon, Shelby, Ioultrie, Champaign, Piatt, Coles and Douglas county, but the number of the district will be changed from 19th to 22d on the new map, if it is finally adopted. Senator Rice Miller (F sponsor of the measure which gives Cook and Lake counties 13 districts and the same number to 100 downstate counties, said 15 other amendments had been prepared. Most of them came from Downstate senators opposed 'to the legislation in its present form. Advocates of the redistricting plan are expected to seek a Senate passage vote before April 1. Senator Frank J.

Dick (R-Quincy), an outspoken opponent, filed an amendment to delay the effective date of the legislation until 1950, contending that if reapportionment the were 1950 voted it should instead be of census 1940. The bill provides for election of congressmen from the new districts in 1948. Redistricting Faces Big Test in Senate Springfield, March 19 (AP) The congressional redistricting plan backed by Governor Green today headed into its first big test on the floor of the Illinois Senate. If the legislation weathers a flurry of amendments offered ly by several Downstate senators opposed to the plan in its present form, its sponsors said passage prospects would be brightened. Debate on six amendments filed yesterday was postponed to allow preparation of additional alteration proposals.

As it stands, the measure would give Cook and Lake counties 13 congressional seats and the same number to 100 Downstate counties, compared Cook with and the Lake present and 15 division for downstate counties, with one representative elected from the state at large. The most sweeping of the six revision proposals was submitted by Sen. Milton Mueller (R-Highland) and called for realignment of 27 southern counties.
