by Mac McGee Of The Herald Sports Staff Tom Sidney's scoring and the hne rebounding or Jim Mason sparked unbeaten Stephen Deca tur to a 56-47 basketball victory over Springfield Feitshans last night in Kintner Gvm It was victory No. 7 and the outcome appeared little in doubt as the Reds quickly sped to a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes. Feitshans pulled to within 7 points at 49-42 with 4:01 re maining, but it was as close as the rivers ever came. Sidney scored 10 of his 29 points in the first quarter and finished with a hot 11 fielders in 22 attempts. Hiram Jackson Feitshans' leading scorer, sat out the first period because of a bruised heel.

He entered in the second quarter and came up with eight points, but the iniurv hnthpred him noticeably in the second half and he managed only three more baskets. Feitshans is now 5-3 for the season. The Reds switched from their run-and-shoot offense to a control type game over the final 10 minutes. They kept the basketball most of the time but couldn't seem to come up with the easy layup basket they were looking for. Sidney's 29 points was the highest for a Stephen Decatur player this seasort.

Mason came through with 12 points, his personal high for the year. Mason was outstanding under both boards, repeatedly corning off with the ball against taller opponents. Stephen Decatur won the sophomore game, 56-49. which hadn't eome close to win- nine in its first five games, ral lied in the closing minutes to up set Lakeview 63-58 last night in Lakeview Gym. The Flaming Hearts fought off an eight-point deficit with a barrage of baskets in the last quarter.

They took their first lead since early in the game at 58-57 with 2:08 minutes left on a basket by Jim Sherrick. Sherrick added another field goal 20 seconds later and his free throw and a basket by Steve Bak er in the closing seconds clinched it. Lakeview's loss was its third in seven games and its sixth straight game: to be decided in the closing minutes. The Spartans seemingly had victory tucked awav with a 47- 39 lead and only 7:40 left. But Effingham- began connecting on easy drive-ms while Lakeview went cold.

The Hearts hit 10 of 14 shots in the final period, the Spartans only 4 of 13. Lakeview was out- scored, 24-13. Effingham hit on onlv 9 of 25 free throws or its victory margin would have been even more The triumph was the first at Effingham for new Coach Jim Moore. It also marked the first time the Eastern Illinois League team had scored over 50 points this season. Sherrick and Baker paced the Hearts' com back.

Sherrick scored 8 of his 1 1 points in the last quarter and Baker, a reserve, got 9 of his 11 in the last half. Steve Horve, also a reserve, paced the Spartans with 1 5 points. Eddie Smith led Effing ham with 14. 1 Effingham easily won the preliminary eame. 62-38.
